1 Turn in Homework! MONDAY’S SCHEDULE FRENZY
EVALUATING EXPRESSIONS WITH VARIABLES Turn in Homework!

2 An expression is NOT an equation
Expressions VS. Equations Which is which? 𝟏 𝟐 πŸ“ βˆ’πŸ” πŸ“πŸŽ+πŸ“πŸŽβˆ’πŸ“πŸŽ πŸ’βˆ™πŸ”=πŸπŸ’ An expression is NOT an equation because it DOES NOT have an equal sign. πŸ“=π’šΓ· 𝟏 πŸ“ πŸ“π’…+π’†βˆ’πŸπŸ’ 𝒂 𝟐 + 𝒃 𝟐 = 𝒄 𝟐 𝟐 πŸ‘ =πŸ’πŸŽβˆ’πŸ‘πŸ πŸπŸ‘πŸ”Γ·πŸπŸ+(πŸπŸπŸ—βˆ’πŸ)

3 If we are only looking at expressions, which is which?
Algebraic VS. Numeric If we are only looking at expressions, which is which? πŸ“βˆ™π’šΓ· 𝟏 πŸ“ πŸ“πŸŽ+πŸ“πŸŽβˆ’πŸ“πŸŽ An algebraic expression contains numbers AND letters and a numeric expression contains only numbers, NO LETTERS! πŸ’βˆ™πŸ”βˆ’πŸπŸ’ πŸ“π’…+π’†βˆ’πŸπŸ’ 𝟏 𝟐 πŸ“ βˆ’πŸ” 𝒂 𝟐 + 𝒃 𝟐 Γ· 𝒄 𝟐 𝟐 πŸ‘ Γ·πŸ’πŸŽβˆ’πŸ‘πŸ πŸπŸ‘πŸ”Γ·π’ˆ+(πŸπŸπŸ—βˆ’πŸ)

4 Algebraic Expressions
We’ve entered the land of ALGEBRA in which we use LETTERS to represent an unknown value. We call these letters, VARIABLES. You could say that variables are numbers in disguise… When we know a variable’s value, the disguise disappears and we can SUBSTITUTE the letter with a number! We typically use lower-case letters in algebraic expressions… not capital letters! 12 1 3 5 999 y m a x

5 What does evaluate mean?
What if I told you… …to evaluate these expressions? πŸ“+𝒃 𝒍𝒆𝒕 𝒃=𝟐 πŸ“+𝟐 π’Šπ’” πŸ• What does evaluate mean? πŸ”Γ·π’™ π’˜π’‰π’†π’ 𝒙=πŸ‘ πŸ”Γ·πŸ‘ π’Šπ’” 𝟐 Evaluate means SOLVE! 𝒆 𝟐 π’Šπ’‡ 𝒆=𝟏𝟎 𝟏𝟎 𝟐 π’Šπ’” 𝟏𝟎𝟎 πŸ–π’ˆ 𝒍𝒆𝒕 π’ˆ=πŸ“ ???
