An expression is NOT an equation
Expressions VS. Equations Which is which? π π π βπ ππ+ππβππ πβπ=ππ An expression is NOT an equation because it DOES NOT have an equal sign. π=πΓ· π π ππ
+πβππ π π + π π = π π π π =ππβππ πππΓ·ππ+(πππβπ)

If we are only looking at expressions, which is which?
Algebraic VS. Numeric If we are only looking at expressions, which is which? πβπΓ· π π ππ+ππβππ An algebraic expression contains numbers AND letters and a numeric expression contains only numbers, NO LETTERS! πβπβππ ππ
+πβππ π π π βπ π π + π π Γ· π π π π Γ·ππβππ πππΓ·π+(πππβπ)

Algebraic Expressions
Weβve entered the land of ALGEBRA in which we use LETTERS to represent an unknown value. We call these letters, VARIABLES. You could say that variables are numbers in disguiseβ¦ When we know a variableβs value, the disguise disappears and we can SUBSTITUTE the letter with a number! We typically use lower-case letters in algebraic expressionsβ¦ not capital letters! 12 1 3 5 999 y m a x

What does evaluate mean?
What if I told youβ¦ β¦to evaluate these expressions? π+π πππ π=π π+π ππ π What does evaluate mean? πΓ·π ππππ π=π πΓ·π ππ π Evaluate means SOLVE! π π ππ π=ππ ππ π ππ πππ ππ πππ π=π ???

πβπ πΓπ π πππππ π MULTIPLY! 8π meansβ¦ 6m 5ac 42t 6,240x 99y 7b
π ππππππππππ
ππ π πΓπ REMEMBER: If we are multiplying a number and a variable, the number is always written 1st! When we βsmashβ a number and letter together with no symbol or space in between we have toβ¦ MULTIPLY! 8π meansβ¦

Letβs put it all together!
Rewrite the expression after substituting the number(s) for the letter(s). Show all your steps using PEMDAS without equal signs and working down your paper. Circle your final answer! Parenthesis Exponents Multiply & Divide Add & Subtract Rewrite the expression after substituting the number(s) for the letter(s). Show all your steps using PEMDAS without equal signs and working down your paper. Circle your final answer! Evaluate the expression. 4x when x = 8 What are the order of operations again? 4β8 + 9 32 + 9 41
