Building Automation System
History In 1883, Warren Johnson, a school teacher from Milwaukee and soon to be founder of Johnson Controls, invented the thermostat. It was a simple device that responded to falling temperature by activating a light in the boiler room, indicating when janitors should shovel more coal into the furnace.
6
Evolution Later the central computer began to give way to distributed digital computers. By 1995, the central controller began to communicate with the internet and thus Building Automation System took birth. Ref:

BAS – Continued.. Designed to monitor and control the mechanical, security, fire and flood safety, lighting (especially emergency lighting), HVAC systems in a building. Issues The Security with the protocols used. BAS were increasingly being connected to corporate networks and also being remotely accessed for management purposes, both for convenience and emergency purposes.
8
BAS – Continued.. The protocols were not designed with security as a primary requirement, thus the majority of systems operate with sub-standard or non-existent security implementations, relying on security through obscurity. Web Services provided the solutions for the above problems. XML, SOAP, WSDL and UDDI are the best answer in solving the integration problems of building automation systems.
9
BAS to IOT (SOB) Expensive Lacked flexibility
Could not be fully automated in commercial and Industrial buildings Paved a path to Smart Office Buildings Capability to join “things” together more efficiently and cost effectively. Collect data and optimize - fully automating the building performance. REF:

Deloitte's office building in Amsterdam
Garage automatically recognizes your car or bike, opens the gate, and guides you to a parking spot and a free electric charger. The office app assigns you a desk, based on your schedule for the day and whether you're in the mood for a standing desk or a place to concentrate. Once you start work, you can use the app to tweak the lighting or heat until it's just right.

Deloitte’s Office -Amsterdam
A cleaning lady who works in this building now has a heat map on her smartphone telling her what toilets have been used and what toilets have not been used. The building knows when the espresso machine needs to be refilled in the break room (the app also remembers how you like your coffee). Towel dispensers in the restroom track use, and ping janitors when it seems especially busy and toilets might need to be cleaned. The on-site gym tracks your progress through the app.
