Schematic drawing of a Nissl-stained motor neuron
Schematic drawing of a Nissl-stained motor neuron. The myelin sheath is produced by oligodendrocytes in the central nervous system and by Schwann cells in the peripheral nervous system. Note the three motor end plates, which transmit the nerve impulse to striated skeletal muscle fibers. (Redrawn, with permission, from Mescher AL. Junqueira’s Basic Histology, 12th ed. McGraw-Hill, 2009.) Source: Nervous System Disorders, Pathophysiology of Disease: An Introduction to Clinical Medicine, 7e Citation: Hammer GD, McPhee SJ.
