2. The National War Museum opened in 1933 as the Scottish Naval and Military Museum. This was seen as a fitting and lasting tribute to the sacrifice made by Scottish men and women during the First World War. One of five Scots who enlisted in the armed services never made it home. The museum’s outstanding collection presents Scotland’s military history from the creation of the first standing army in the 17th century to the present time.
