Write an equation for each of the following.
The sum of x and 11 is 12. The quotient of a number and five is thirty. The product of eight and Sarah’s age is 52. The difference of Dave’s test grade and four is thirty-six. Jose earns $12/hour. He earned $240 last week. How many hours did he work? x + 11 =12 x 5 = 30 Let x = a number Let x = Sarah’s age x = 52 Let x = Dave’s test grade x – 4 = 36 Let x = number of hours (pay per hour)(number of hours) = pay earned 12x = 240
2
Write and solve an equation to answer the question.
The high score on a video game is points. This is 1500 points higher than the lowest score. What is the lowest score? HINT: Remember to write your “knows and Finds”, write an equation using words first. For example: (number of pencils bought)(cost per pencil) = cost of all pencils
3
Know Find High score = The low score High score is 1500 more than low score High score, Low Score, Number of points between high and low score Let x = low score High Score = low score = x 13000 – 1500 = x – 1500 (-1500) = x + (-1500) = x The Low Score is points.

Lesson 2.6: Solving Equations using Multiplication and Division
Don’t Write Multiplication and Division Properties of Equality: Multiplying or Dividing BOTH SIDES of an equation by the SAME number results in an equivalent equation – the equation is true. B.S. of Algebra – must do the SAME to BOTH SIDES “What is being done to variable?” YOU do the INVERSE to BOTH SIDES
5
Examples: 3x = What is being done to variable? Mult. by 3 What do you have to do? Div. B.S. by 3 x = 7 What is being done to variable? Div. by –2 What do you have to do? Mult. B.S. by -2 1 1 x = -16
6
Examples: 3) -13y = What is being done to variable? Mult. by -13 What do you have to do? Div. B.S. by -13 y = 5 4) What is being done to variable? Div. by 6 What do you have to do? Mult. B.S. by 6 1 1 n = 54
7
36 = 2y +10y 2y + 10y = 36 12y = 36 12 y = 3 p , #8-22 evens
