Summer 2016 Course Work in CVE & German Continued Research performing modal analysis through MATLAB in TU Darmstadt’s Civil & Environmental Eng. Dept. Fall 2016 Received: Beatriz Demers scholarship TU Darmstadt IREP scholarship Honors Internship at DB Systems- Munich on Vibration Control Spring/ Summer 2017

9 Exchange Model: URI/TU Braunschweig Unique Dual master/MBA programs (TU Darmstadt following in `17-18) Undergraduates in exchange for Graduate students URI undergrads pay instate tuition for Fall semester at URI TU-BS students pay 1500 Euros program fee to finance URI student summer immersion course 2 URI undergrads at TU-BS in WS in exchange for 1 TU-BS student at URI for one academic year to pursue dual master or MBA in a year + a summer TU-BS master students enroll for 1 summer credit at URI to write thesis MBA students pay in-state for the summer term and the credit overload for fall and spring Usually URI students allow for TU-BS students to use free semester slots If TU-BS students come in excess of the exchange balance they pay in-state instead of out-of-state tuition (students covered by a DAAD ISAP stipend are counted as excess of balance)

10 Exchange Model Dual master/MBA Degree Programs
The URI/TU Braunschweig Model

11 Benefits for both institutions
Benefits for URI undergrads: Direct Enrollment yet tailored/sheltered program Language courses geared towards engineering students Free summer immersion language course with expeditions Excellent service (pick-up from airport/move in help provided by IO; help with visas and health insurance etc. ) Excellent mentoring (Patenprogramm) For top students research opportunities in TU-BS labs

12 Exchange model Dual master/MBA degree programs Benefits for TU-BS graduates
Dual degree from a German & an American institution Almost tuition free academic year abroad Excellent supervision/guidance by URI faculty in a small College of Engineering / MBA program Transparent and feasible dual degree program structure (sample curricula and credit transfer schemes for all participating schools) Big number of exchange slots and participating disciplines Wide variety of options for participating students: Graduate program at TU Braunschweig: Options at URI add value to German degree: M.Sc. in Civil Engineering Wirtschafts-ingenieur-wesen/Bau M.Sc. in Industrial Engineering M.Sc. in Ocean Engineering MBA

13 Beyond Successful Exchange Research project during Undergrad exchange leading to dual master
Research in URI Chem Eng. Lab on use of emulsion templating as a method for producing new lithium ion battery anodes from novel materials Fall Research in TU-BS Institute for Pharmaceutical Technology on drug loading techniques. Fall 2014 6 month internship at BASF Ludwigshafen– investigating different electrolyte additives for lithium ion batteries Spring/Summer 2015 Dual masters in Chemical-Pharmaceutical Engineering URI/TU-BS With joint advisors at both universities IEP Student: Chemical Engineering and German

14 Beyond Successful Exchane : Continued Graduate Education after Undergraduate Exchange
URI/TU-BS dual master recipients stayed as doctoral candidates at TU-Braunschweig URI French IEP grads went on to Ph.D program at Université de Technologie de Compiègne Zhejiang University 3+x dual B.S./M.S. grads stayed on for PhDs at URI TU-BS/URI dual masters came back as PostDocs to URI (Ocean Eng.) TU-BS dual masters came back to help run the summer URI International Engineering Academy Univ. of Zaragoza exchange student helps URI faculty with Career Tech Academy in Providence URI/TUBS Dual degree grads help with IEP internship placements

15 Funding & Sustainability
Joint teaching, exchange, consulting Joint grant applications Industry collaboration leads to Internship placements locally & globally IEP graduates make excellent trainee program recruits & full- time hires In return, corporate funding for IEP Government/Foundation support To launch a new program (GIEP/CIEP/JIEP) Student Scholarships Internship Salaries (CIEP/SIEP) Private Donors Scholarships Housing Facilities Program Support Funding & Sustainability

16 Faculty Exchange/ Collaboration/ Consulting leads to joint grant applications
Faculty exchange – URI faculty teach at TU Braunschweig or Zhejiang Univ. during sabbaticals TU-BS faculty named Adjunct Professor at URI teaching hybrid courses (Industrial Eng.) Curricular Consulting by URI OCE faculty to build Ocean College at Zhejiang University Successful joint grant applications

17 Joint NSF-Partnership in International Research and Education (NSF-PIRE) Grant
$2.5 million NSF-PIRE grant to URI to foster international research and education in collaboration with the TU Braunschweig in point-of- care diagnostics EDUCATIONAL ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Developed multinational and multidisciplinary vertical teams including faculty, postdocs, graduate and undergraduate students to internationalize engineering education at graduate level Preparation for global career RESEARCH ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Developed a prototype lab-on-a-chip device for detecting disease biomarkers Capitalized on complementary research strengths to create innovative discoveries Developed microfluidic-based ocean applications

18 Why was Joint Grant Application successful?
Leveraged long-time academic partnership (exchange and faculty collaboration) Capitalized on complementary research strengths to create innovative discoveries Teamed across disciplines of engineering, chemistry and biology at URI to collaborate with partners at TU Braunschweig to conduct research in microfluidics technologies and applications for point-of-care diagnostics

19 Leveraging URI/PUCV Partnership for Successful Grant Proposal to Expand SIEP to Latin America
100K Strong in the Americas Over $50,000 of agency funds One of four universities to inaugurate Obama’s initiative Launch ceremony with Joseph Biden and John Kerry Over $35,000 in student scholarships Instrumental cost share from Colleges of Engineering/A&S Front page of Providence Journal

20 Module 2 Successful Grant Proposal to Expand SIEP to Latin America
Key activities Activity 1. January-August: International Internship Program in Chile Activity 2. August-December: Bilateral Academic Exchange Activity 3. September-December: Innovations in Sustainability in Chile Spanish course Activity 4. January: Sustainability Project and Study Tour in Chile

21 100 K Funding allowed for J-Term in Chile
Initiatives with our partner University PUCV J-Term 7 students, 4 engineering disciplines 16-day study-abroad experience: Civil engineering course taught by URI Professor at PUCV facilities Joint teaching with Professor and Assistant Dean of School of Engineering at PUCV Sightseeing and cultural events organized by PUCV Field trip to Chilean Sustainability Expert Language and cross-cultural experiences Amazing experience for students who have never travelled to South America Mini-Study-Abroad experience as a glimpse of the 4th year in the IEP

22 Industry support Engage local industry with global footprint
Don’t just ask for support – provide service such as internship placements; recruit trainees, employees, organize joint workshops React to industry demand, e.g. by launching new programs such as Chinese IEP, Japanese IEP Attract funding by local/global companies like: ZF, Deutsche Bahn, Siemens, Conti Hasbro, Sensata Technologies Shimadzu Hexagon Intelligent Automation

23 Government & Foundation support
Max Kade Foundation Supports IEP Housing Dual Master Scholarships J-Term Max Kade Scholar in German Studies Japan Foundation Supports Teaching staff National security Education Program (NSEP) Supports (Chinese) Language Flagship Program Hanban/Confucius Supports teaching staff scholarships DAAD Supports DAAD Lecturer in German Study Tour Undergrad/grad scholarships

24 J-Term Germany (Funded by DAAD/max Kade)
Initiatives with our partner University TU-BS J-Term to Germany Usually younger German IEP/IBP students Tour Germany as site for science, technology & culture Integrate visits to partner university laboratories Faculty-led tours of labs GIEP student researcher tour of labs
