Public Service Announcement: Stop Littering to Save Animals! Slogan: Save Critters, Don’t Litter! By: Katherine Sanford Mr. Devant Global Perspectives

2 Littering Littering is disposing of objects improperly (for example, leaving waste on the ground instead of putting it into the trash can or recycling bin). Litter can come from multiple areas including construction sites, households, industries, and pedestrians. Littering can occur when a trash can is inaccessible or people are too indolent to discard their waste properly.

3 Negative Effects of Littering
Litter is an endangerment to public health. It attracts vermin and is a perfect breeding ground for bacteria. It costs money to clean litter from an environment. Accumulated waste is a probable fire hazard. Disregarded trash unfavorably impacts the overall image of communities. Litter can also encourage others to trash areas because it is delivering a message that it is acceptable.

4 Deadly Effects of Littering
Every day, items used by people are disregarded and cause life threatening situations for animals. Plastic bags and bottles can cause harm to whales, turtles, and seabirds. These animals will mistake the items for food and choke on them or get fatal bowel obstructions. Tin cans, cups, and jars can endanger starving animals that get their heads stuck inside when they try to reach leftover crumbs. Gum can hurt animals as they often step in gum and become unable to move. Larger animals may get it matted in their fur. Beer and soda cans can cause harm to tiny animals because they are tempting to those searching for shade or food. Creatures can also get cut by cans’ sharp edges. Fishing lines often wrap around the beaks and wings of birds and hooks are frequently swallowed or embedded into their skin or beaks.

8 In order to reduce the damage to animals, we must stop littering.
How To Help In order to reduce the damage to animals, we must stop littering. Don’t litter. Keep a garbage bag in your car so you can dispose of waste properly instead of throwing it out of the window. Report people you have witnessed littering. If they are caught, they will most likely not do it again, at least in that area.

9 How to Help Be sure your garbage cans have tight-fitting lids so no trash escapes. Inform others on the dangers litter causes. Tie paper into bundles before putting it in your recycling bin. Spread the word of the importance of disposing of waste properly!
