2. Earlier Explorations
When Spain and Portugal returned from North America with Gold and other riches, France and England became interested in it.
In 1497, Giovanni Cabotto was sent by England to explore the eastern shore

He reached Labrador and Newfoundland and found the area rich in fish
1524 Giovanni de Verrazano was sent by the king of France to find a route to China

3. Jacques Cartier Sent on a mission by the king of France
There were 3 purposes of his mission were:
1) Find a route to China (economic)
2) Bring back gold and other riches (eco)
3) Claim land for France (eco-political)

4. Voyage 1 Accomplishments
On this voyage, he did the following
1) Explore the St. Lawrence and Gaspe Coast
2) Claimed the land for France
3)Met friendly Amerindians some of which were brought back to France
4)Discovered a westward flowing river he thought led to China and named it the St. Lawrence

5. 1535. Cartier's 2nd Voyage Returned with 3 ships Accomplishments:
1)Went up the St. Lawrence to the two native villages of Stadacona and Hochelaga
2) Indians instructed the Europeans: how to survive the Winter and cure scurvy 
Relationships became strained and Cartier returned to France
They went home

6. Cartier’s 3rd mission
The mission of the third voyage was to create a colony
The expedition included some priests to convert Amerindians to Christianity (social)
He argues with the leader of the expedition and returned to Europe with pyrite and quarts thinking them gold and diamonds
The mission failed and no one from France returned for 70 years

7. Economic outcome of Cartier’s Voyages
Discovered natural resources. esp: fish and furs
Fish is the first resource to be exploited by Europeans (first people era)
They soon realize the resource of furs (French Regime) and merchants begin thinking of ways to exploit the resource
This leads to settlement in 1608
