2. These days many people in the United States and in richer countries around the world live in modern homes or apartment houses.

3. But all around the world and for thousands of years, people lived in somewhat different types of houses.

4. Of course, even today in the United States there are different styles of homes.

5. For instance, in New England and in the East you are more likely to come across “Colonial” architecture. You don’t see too many houses like this one in California or out west.

6. Many big houses and mansions are inspired by the architecture used by the Greeks and Romans. This kind of architecture is known as classical. They often have a lot of columns!

7. Another interesting style of architecture is called Victorian
Another interesting style of architecture is called Victorian. Many of these homes were built in the late 19th Century.

8. One type of Victorian home is called the “Queen Anne” style
One type of Victorian home is called the “Queen Anne” style. These homes are named for the British Queen of that time. They often have a special cupola, as seen here.

9. The period between 1900-1950 was dominated by a famous architect named Frank Lloyd Wright.

10. He liked low houses that were very horizontal.

11. However, around the world you will find styles of homes that are bit peculiar. Some of these styles of homes were used years ago and some are still used today!

12. For instance, here is a Korean home called an Ondol
For instance, here is a Korean home called an Ondol. It is used in the cold winter months. The heat from a stove in the kitchen goes in a tunnel under the floor.

13. You can see in this picture how the steam rises up
You can see in this picture how the steam rises up. Then the people in the house can sleep on the floor to keep warm. They don’t even have to wear shoes, it is so toasty warm!

14. In the United States, most people live in their own houses or apartments separate from other families. But in Fujian, China that is not the case. Many people live in complex houses.

15. These homes were built 300 years ago with very strong walls to keep out any enemies who wanted to get in. Up to 100 people might live together in one of these houses.

16. Sometimes your home needs to go well with the environment you live in
Sometimes your home needs to go well with the environment you live in. In the Philippines, it is very hot on the ground and there are many poisonous snakes. So years ago people there used to live in tree houses!

17. Members of the Bagobo Tribe were safe from animals and their enemies up in the trees. Plus the air was cooler up there!

18. A more famous example of a house based on the environment is the igloo
A more famous example of a house based on the environment is the igloo. These were houses actually made of snow. While it was still pretty cold in there, the air trapped inside made it not AS cold as outside. Brrrrr….

19. These days our homes tend to stay in one place
These days our homes tend to stay in one place. But some groups of people need to move their homes around in order to hunt for animals. That is the purpose of the Native American teepee.

20. Years ago, teepees were used because they could be easily moved around to follow herds of animals. Do you why the top is open? Because that is where the smoke goes out of the house after cooking on an open fire inside the house.

21. Another house that can be transferred around is the dome-shaped Bulla homes of the Atr tribe in Africa. It is made from straw so it’s easy to carry!
