Welcome to Year 1

2 St. Peter’s Infant School
Our learning this year will be based around the themes below. You will receive a letter at the start of each term informing you about what the children will be learning. Term 1: Superheroes Term 2: Splendid Skies Term 3: Dinosaur Planet Term 6: Beat, Band, Boogie Term 4: Street Detectives Term 5: Beachcombers

3 A typical day in Year 1 Morning:
St. Peter’s Infant School A typical day in Year 1 Morning: 9:00 registration followed by Handwriting, English and Maths sessions. Assembly and playtime split up the above sessions – snack time is incorporated into playtime. Fruit will continue to be provided daily. Afternoon: Phonics / Reading – individual and independent. PE and / or Topic: Science, History, Geography, Computing, RE, Music, Art & PSHE.

Reading Your child’s reading book will be changed every other day when brought to school. Please indicate in the Contact Book that you have read with your child. Please encourage and remind your children to put their reading book and contact book together into the special box in their class.

6 Writing St. Peter’s Infant School This includes:
Use of ‘think it, say it, write it, read it, check it’ Writing sentences using the correct punctuation (full stops, capital letters, spaces between words) Grammar – punctuation, adjectives, nouns, Spellings – taught weekly, incorporated into dictated sentences Application of phonics Read, check and improve Handwriting: on the line, same size, lead out flicks (not joined), lower case and capital letters Capital letters for names, places, days and months

Counting forwards & backwards from any number up to and beyond 100 Count in 2s, 5s and 10s Write digits and words for numeral 0 -20 Number bonds to 10 e.g. 0+3=3, 1+2=3, 2+1=3, 3+0=3 Understand value of each digit in a 2-digit number including zero Understand and use ‘+’ ‘-’ ‘=‘ Understand multiplication and division through grouping, sharing, repeated addition and subtraction Fractions, measurement, geometry (2D and 3D shapes), position

Topic Work This incorporates: Science, Computing, History, Geography, Music, R.E., Art and D.T. These subjects are taught through a topic so as to link ideas together in a practical, exploratory way.

St. Peter’s Infant School Homework Daily home reading Weekly Maths and English based on week’s learning Phonics – information on week’s learning Spellings Mathletics, Lexia and Purple Mash HOMEWORK CLUB every Monday with free crèche for younger siblings 3-4pm.

Y1 Phonic Screening During June 2017, the children’s progress in phonics will be assessed via the National Phonics Screening Check.
