1 Animal Farm Chapters VIII

2 1. Why did no one “care to mention” recalling a commandment about animals killing other animals in the hearing of the pigs or the dogs? They didn’t want to be put on trial or hurt by association. They didn’t want to appear that they were sticking up for traitors. The animals didn’t want to be attacked by the dogs like Napoleon did to Boxer.

3 2. How had the sixth commandment been changed?
“No animal shall kill another animal WITHOUT REASON.”

4 3. What were the animals told about Snowball’s medals?
They were told that Snowball circulated a rumor that he had earned them when in reality, he did not.

5 4. What made the animals fear and hate Frederick?
Napoleon. He told the animals that Frederick was plotting an attack and that Frederick was abusing the animals severely on his farm. Napoleon also told the animals that he knocked over the windmill.

6 5. How does Frederick trick Napoleon?
He gives him forged bank notes that were worthless. At first, Napoleon thinks he is being smart by not taking “cheques” because Frederick could potentially not pay him.

7 Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact of 1939
AKA: The “Hitler-Stalin” Pact AKA: The Devil’s Pact AKA: The Unholy Alliance *United Stalin’s Soviet and Hitler’s Nazi Germany.*

8 The Hitler-Stalin Pact…
Was a Non-Aggression Pact Neither country will invade the other Set to last 10 years. Was a way to help both Stalin and Hitler Shocked and horrified the people of both countries. Both sides were incredibly suspicious of the other’s actions. Stalin held the power, having the only army that could actually single-handedly defeat Hitler’s army. Hitler asked for 100 years, but Stalin determined the realistic length of 10 years.

9 It all turned sour when…
Hitler invaded Russia in June of 1941, ending the non-aggression pact. Called “Operation Barbarossa”

10 6. Describe the battle with Frederick’s men and explain how the animals felt immediately after the destruction of the windmill. How did the pigs renew the animals’ spirits? Frederick rolled in with 15 men and guns. They blew up the windmill. The animals made Frederick and his men retreat, but they felt immediately that they had been defeated. They were incredibly upset because the windmill was knocked down and they wasted two years on it. The pigs motivate the animals by insisting that they had won and by celebrating their victory.

11 7. Who, for the first time, is beginning to feel old?
Boxer. The thought of rebuilding the windmill exhausts him.

12 8. What vice have the pigs now adopted?
Drinking Whiskey

13 9. What made Squealer announce that Napoleon was dying?
He was manipulating the feelings and scaring them into thinking that Napoleon would die and that they would be leaderless, which, in turn, would leave them vulnerable to attack or a horrible dictatorship. This tactic also rallies support for whatever Napoleon will do next.

14 10. Why did Napoleon plough up the retired animal grazing ground?
To plant barley. They will soon begin to brew/distill alcoholic beverages.

15 What is the connection between Squealer’s fall from the ladder and the change in the fifth commandment? He was drunk and painting up the amendment to the fifth commandment when he fell from the ladder. The new commandment reads “No animal shall drink alcohol in excess.”
