1 Our topic for this term is
In Literacy this week we read the poem ‘If I Was a Superhero…’ (Sally Gray). The children did a great job at spotting the rhyming words in each verse, I was very impressed! We passed our own superhero figure around the circle and used our imagination to think about what we would do if we were superheroes. This talk before writing definitely helped us to break the flow of speech into words. The children are getting better at repeating their sentence and thinking about which word they need to write next. Some children were even able to include two rhyming words in their sentence. We will use this writing to create our own superhero poem book. It was lovely listening to children’s thoughtful ideas about how they would save the world and their friends. A couple of children said they would like to save Jesus from dying. In phonics this week we have been trying really hard to spot the digraphs when sounding out words. Children have been adding their own sound buttons under graphemes and lines under digraphs to help them. In Maths this week, the children played a superhero addition game in pairs. They each took turns to roll two spot/numeral dice and count on to find the total number. We are looking for evidence of children who are using the language of addition when calculating e.g. add, plus, equals. When they had calculated the total number of spots the children found the numeral and coloured in that superhero. The winner was the person with the most superheroes in their colour at the end of the game. We will also have a go at solving a new problem using the padlocks and keys. Once they crack the code- unlocking the superheroes will be super easy! qu ee n Our topic for this term is ‘Brave Britain’ but this half term we will be thinking about ‘Superheroes’. WB 29/2/16 Children have enjoyed using the iPad’s recently to learn about QR codes. They have been scanning some QR codes themselves to discover images of different superheroes. They then wrote labels for the superheroes they found. This is something you could create easily at home. Why not have a go at creating your own QR codes for your child to scan. The children listened to a story about some white and grey mice this week to help demonstrate the importance of adopting a ‘growth mindset’. Remember to ask your child about the story at home. Can they remember which mouse was most successful and why? What happened at the end? After that, we began to talk about what special powers we would like to have. A few children suggested they would like to have special freezing powers like Elsa from Frozen. Using the children’s interests as a starting point for more learning, children will return to the classroom later in the week to find super villain has frozen the superheroes! The children will explore the ice and use tools and other materials and to investigate the best way to release them! Thank you to the parents who attended the parent consultations this week. It was great to catch up and I hope you found the meetings informative. I am always here so if you think of anything you forgot to ask or would like extra information on please ask.
