Line Symmetry www.mathsrevision.com Learning Intention
Success Criteria We are learning how to recognise and create line symmetry. Understand the term line symmetry. Complete Drawings given the line of symmetry.

Line Symmetry www.mathsrevision.com
A line symmetry occurs in a shape if, when the shape is folded over the line the two pieces either side of the line, are exactly the same.

Starter Questions www.mathsrevision.com
Q1. Round the following to the first decimal place. (a) (b) Q2. What fraction is the green area. What fraction is the grey area. Q3. A pencil costs 22p. How much does a 1000 cost. Put your answer in £’s.
15
Rotation (Turn) Symmetry
Learning Intention Success Criteria We are learning what rotational symmetry and its order. Understand the terms rotational symmetry. 2. State the turn symmetry and order for shapes.
16
Rotation (Turn) Symmetry
Draw the other side of the shape rotated through 180o around the red point. Order 2 means it looks the same twice as it is rotated through 360o. This new shape has half-turn symmetry ORDER 2.
17
Rotation (Turn) Symmetry
State the turn symmetry for each and its order. Square (¼ turn symmetry) Order 4 Rectangle (½ turn symmetry) Order 2
18
Creating Half-Turn Symmetry
Learning Intention Success Criteria We are learning how we can create half-turn symmetry for a shape. Understand the terms half-turn symmetry. Draw the other half of a shape such that it has half-turn symmetry.
19
Creating Half -Turn Symmetry
Draw the other side of the shape rotated through 180o around the red point. The final shape depends on the centre of rotation.

Translation (slide) Symmetry
Learning Intention Success Criteria We are learning the meaning of Translational (slide) symmetry using tile patterns. Understand the terms translational, slide congruent and tile. Identify shapes that tile. Construct a tile pattern for shapes.
24
Translation (Slide) Symmetry
Gaps Gaps Using Slide Symmetry Shape tiles DOES NOT tiles Gaps between shapes A shape that tiles can be completely surrounded by congruent shapes WITHOUT leaving any gaps.
25
Translation (Slide) Symmetry
How can you tell if the tiling is complete ?

Translation (Slide) Symmetry
27
Translation (Slide) Symmetry
Complete the tiling Is this the complete tiling ? No ! Why ?
28
Translation (slide) Symmetry
Write down as many tile patterns as you can that you see every day.
