Why use digital devices?
Enhance visual literacy Students today live in a multimedia world and appreciate variety in their learning environment. Some forms of literacy they can develop include textual, numerical, visual, audio and multimedia. Visual Literacy can be defined as the ability to understand and produce visual messages. Both teachers and students can benefit by developing their abilities to create, use and evaluate visual resources "Young people learn more than half of what they know from visual information, but few schools have an explicit curriculum to show students how to think critically about visual data" Mary Alice White, researcher, Columbia Teacher's College Using digital devices to create multimedia is highly engaging and requires critical thinking and creativity.

Using student photos There are some issues to consider when publishing student images which need to be kept in mind. Students are increasingly publishing their work, including images of themselves, not only for the school community, but often to a global community via the web (eg MySpace, FaceBook, Youtube etc) It is important that students are educated about some of the dangers of posting photos of themselves in an online environment. Probably the easiest way to ensure anonymity online is for students to create avatars for themselves. This is an image that represents them but gives no indication of what the person actually looks like. Students should also only include their first name when posting online.
