10 Starting a Conversation
Activity 2: Starting a Conversation

11 Starting a Conversation
Beginning a conversation with new people is a weird (奇怪的) experience for many people, especially in a new environment. Here are some ways to help you break the ice.

12 Ways to start a conversation
By introducing yourself By asking a question By making a statement By getting attention

13 When you come up to someone you have never talked to before, you may politely introduce yourself and simply ask them who they are to start the conversation. Hi, nice to meet you. My name is ___. And you? Hey, I am ___ from ___ school. How about you?

14 Sometimes, asking questions is also a good way to start a conversation
Sometimes, asking questions is also a good way to start a conversation. You may ask information (訊息) or for help. Have you talked to everyone in our class? Where do you live? Can you show me how to get to Taipei main station from school?

15 Notice: Not everyone feels comfortable about personal questions unless you are close friends. It’s better to begin personal questions with: If you don’t mind me/my asking…. Can I ask you a personal question? I hope this is not offensive (唐突的)….

16 Think of a question to start a conversation with your classmates!

17 It’s also a good way to start a conversation by making a statement to share your ideas with others.
It is really hot today, isn’t it? I like your shoes. Where did you buy them? Sandy looks different today. Is it because of her hair?

18 Now, do you have any ideas to share with your classmates?

19 If you have something important to say, or you need to get the attention from someone who seems to be busy at the moment, you have to ask for his/her attention. Do you have a minute? May I have a word with you? Is it convenient for you to talk now? Can I have a talk with you?

20 Ask for your classmates’ attention now and start a conversation.
