Year One Welcome Meeting
Aim: To provide the information that will help us work in partnership in giving your child a happy, secure and successful experience in Year One.

Staffing Mrs. Nicholson is the class teacher.
Mrs. Boyle will be teaching the children on Monday. Mrs. Lanyon is the Learning Support Assistant.

Transition There is a significant difference between the Child Initiated Leaning approach in EYFS and the content led curriculum of Year One. We are trying to make the transition as smooth and positive as possible-still providing opportunities for Activities and plenty of outdoor time and learning. Please let me know in the morning of any minor issues or make an appointment for after school if it may be a longer discussion!

Keeping Healthy Please ensure that your child arrives on time! The school gate is open from 8:35. There is a breakfast club available if you would like to drop your child off earlier. Please provide a piece of fruit or vegetable for morning break and, if providing a packed lunch, an appropriate amount of healthy food with no nuts! Please order hot lunches on time. Children are encouraged to bring a water bottle but please ensure they are as leak proof as possible. We have two sessions of P.E. each week and there are lots of other physical activity opportunities including Walk Once a Week- WoW- to School. We are planning a Walk (from Riley Park) on Wednesday once a month. Try to encourage a good night’s sleep! Please ensure any inhalers are up to date and attend school to administer any medication required at lunchtime. Try to make medical appointments outside school hours and ensure your child has regular teeth and eye checks. Please ensure long hair is tied back and that you notify the school of any spotted head lice! Please ensure your child is wearing the correct uniform and that all items are labelled. No jewellery please though if your child can tell the time a sensible watch is acceptable.

Well-Being We want our school to be a happy environment where all children can learn and play safely. We have four clear rules that define the expectations we have for good behaviour. There are many rewards for positive behaviour, stickers, literacy/numeracy stars of the day, star of the week and kindness tree leaves and polite parrot feathers. The children receive behaviour marks for making the wrong choices. They have an opportunity to redeem these but of they are still in place by the next lunchtime the children will spend 15 minutes of their lunch hour in Reflection Time. Here children are given a chance to think about their behaviour and ways to improve it. Any hurtful behaviour results in reflection time. We are introducing the Growth Mindset programme this term. This encourages children to have a positive approach to learning and to develop curiosity, perseverance and resilience. If a child is worried or upset they are encouraged to tell a trusted adult or communicate through the feelings posters. Please inform the school of any domestic issues that may have an impact on your child so that we can always respond appropriately. An afternoon appointment is much better for a long conversation. Please ensure contact numbers are up to date.
6
Religion We have two hours of R.E each week and are using the Come and See scheme. The children learn about their faith and about how to respond to it as we Live and Learn as Friends of Jesus. The first topic is about families so please could you provide your child with a photograph of their family for our display. Please try to say and discuss the prayers in the St Peter’s prayer book. We pray regularly in school. The prayer bag will be coming home shortly! The children will be participating in assemblies so please come and be proud if you can! There will be an occasional home/school link sheet to complete.
7
Literacy There is a Literacy lesson every day. The children will be introduced to a wide range of stories, poems and information texts and encouraged to respond to them in a variety of ways. There are phonic sessions three times per week, organised in ability groups. In these the children learn a range of sounds and how to read and spell with them. Children will be trying to listen carefully and speak clearly. Show and Tell will take place on Wednesdays and the children will normally be asked to bring an item linked to a specific topic. I will try and communicate this through the class representative. Please read to your child as often as you can. Library books can usually be changed on Fridays. Reading homework will normally be given on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. There is guidance in the reading record about how best to support your child, but learning and using sounds is a crucial skill in this year. The children will take a statutory phonics test at the end of Year One. Please use the reading record to comment on any positive aspects of your child’s reading or to communicate any concerns. Help your child to use the sounds he/she knows to have a go at spelling words and to start to write in phrases or simple sentences. Mrs. Lanyon will send a phonics sheet home each Friday so please support your child in completing the task and then paste it in their homework book. This week we will also send a list of key words for your child to learn to read and spell. We will have a spelling review before half term.

Numeracy There is a Numeracy lesson every day with practical and more formal activities in counting, calculating, measuring and shape and space. Reinforcement at home could include: Counting and writing numbers to 100 and stating the number one more or less than a given one. Counting in twos, fives and tens to the tenth multiple and even beyond! Counting on to add/back to subtract and recording number sentences with the correct symbols. Learning pairs of numbers that make 10 and double numbers to Telling the o’clock/half hour times, adding coins to 20p (or more) comparing lengths and weights and naming and describing 2D/3D shapes. Finding halves and quarters of shapes and small quantities. The children will be introduced to the web site My Maths and will shortly be sent a log in number so that they can access the site from home. Homework will then be set most weekends to consolidate or extend our work in class.

Domestics Please ensure your child has a named plastic A4 folder.
Parent help is always very much appreciated. We need help first thing in the mornings to hear readers, change books, organise the library or help with creative activities. We would also be glad of assistance with science or computing on Wednesday afternoons. Please let me know if you think you can help. Please ensure your child has a named plastic A4 folder. Donations of tissues would be very welcome, as well as any construction toys your child has outgrown but that others might enjoy. Please take and complete the forms and return as soon as possible. Thank you! Any questions?
