3 Careers Expo and Information evening
Tuesday, August 1 from 5:30pm Access and receive career and pathway information from a broad range of local employees and employers Industry representatives and training organisations will be attending Meet past-pupils

4 2018 Year 11 Year 11 students have two courses of study available to them: The Year 11 VCE Program - based on the VCE, providing learning opportunities and experiences that lead to the study of the VCE in Year 12 Year 11 Applied Learning - for students whose preferred learning style is more ‘hands–on’ and vocationally orientated leading to the VCAL.

5 The VCE as a course of study
Generally taken over two years Over 90 VCE studies (with many different LOTE and VET offerings) St Patrick’s offers over 40 of these (including VET) It is not possible to proceed with all subjects listed in the booklet

6 The VCE as a course of study
Most studies have four units Don’t have to choose all four, although this is recommended for most students Each unit lasts for a semester Many Year 10 students have already commenced their VCE

7 The VCE as a course of study
Units 1/2 usually attempted in Year 11 Most students do 14 units in Year i.e. RE, English Group plus five others Units 3/4 usually attempted in Year 12 Most Year 12 students do 10 units i.e. RE (non-VCE), English Group plus four others

8 The VCE as a course of study
Units 1 and 2 - can be done as single units Units 3/4 – must be done as a sequence

9 Successful completion of the VCE
Must satisfactorily complete 16 units including: - At least three units from the English group, two must be a Units 3–4 sequence - At least three Units 3–4 sequences other than English, which may include any number of English sequences once the English requirement has been met - Any number of approved VET units can be included in the 16 units

10 Satisfactory completion of VCE units
The teacher will set a variety of assessment tasks to allow you to achieve each of the learning outcomes Each unit of every study has between two and four learning outcomes

11 Satisfactory completion of VCE units
The award of ‘satisfactory completion’ is based on a decision that the student has demonstrated achievement of the outcomes specified For Unit 1/2 studies, these are the only form of assessment required for satisfactory completion

12 Expected standard of attainment
The expected minimum standard of attainment for graded assessment tasks in all AusVELS, Awakenings and VCE subjects at St Patrick’s College is 50%.

13 Expected standard of attainment
This assists and supports teachers in making on-balance judgements regarding the awarding of a Satisfactory (S) or Not Satisfactory (N) unit result by establishing the minimum level of performance required by a student to clearly display the required key knowledge and key skills that underpinning any outcome.

14 Expected standard of attainment
By not meeting the expected minimum standard of attainment of 50% for any assessment task, a student places himself at risk of not meeting the minimum required standard for satisfactory completion

15 Expected standard of attainment
Should this occur, a teacher shall permit or require a student to submit further work, or complete supplementary tasks to meet satisfactory completion requirements of a unit (including work previously submitted).

16 School assessment in VCE Unit 3/4 studies
For Unit 3/4 studies there are additional types of assessment: 1. School assessments 2. Examinations There are two kind of school assessments – SACs and SATs

17 School assessment in VCE Unit 3/4 studies
School-assessed coursework (SAC) Will be mainly done in class time Contributes a percentage to the final assessment

18 School assessment in VCE Unit 3/4 studies
School-assessed tasks (SAT) Used in studies where products or models are assessed e.g. Studio Art, Food Studies, Media Same kind of task for every school Specifications set by VCAA

19 School assessment in VCE Unit 3/4 studies
Exact content decided by the school to match with your learning experiences and resources VCAA specifies how marks are to be awarded Teacher does the marking

20 School-assessed tasks (SAT)
Folio based School-Assessed Tasks require a sustained commitment to classwork and home study to complete a folio to a high standard. This must be considered carefully before committing to one or more folio-based VCE studies.

21 External examinations
Set and marked by VCAA Can be written, oral, performance or electronic All held in October - November Results reported to you as a grade from A+ to E or UG (ungraded)

22 General Achievement Test
Done by students enrolled in any VCE Units 3/4 study A three hour test consisting of a writing task and a series of multiple-choice questions covering general knowledge Used by VCAA to ensure that schools are marking to a Statewide standard GAT results reported to you

23 Year 11 VCE Program -Core Subjects
Religious Education (5 periods p/wk) English Group studies (5 periods p/wk)

24 Religious Education Religious Education is compulsory for all Years 11 and 12 students Several options Your current Year 10 RE teacher will help you decide the best option for you

Option 2: Texts and Traditions VCE Units 1/2 Option 3: Texts and Traditions VCE Unit 1 and Religion and Society VCE Unit 2 Option 4: Religion and Society VCE Unit 2 and Faith in Action (non-VCE) Option 5: Religion and Society VCE Units 3/4

26 Year 11 VCE RE options…. Students studying Foundation English VCE Units 1/2 will be enrolled in the Non-VCE Year 11 Religious Education program. Applied Learning students will participate in a RE course which appropriately recognises and supports boys whose preferred learning style is more ‘hands–on’ and vocationally orientated.

28 VCE English pathways There are four English options available to Year 11 VCE students: VCE Units 1/2 English VCE Units 1/2 English Language VCE Units 1/2 Literature VCE Units 1/2 Foundation English

30 Vocational English Available to those are currently studying Yr 10 Pre-Vocational English Also to those who were, or currently are, supported by the Linguistics program or the Enhanced Learning team. Yr 10 teachers may identify other students who they believe would benefit from this option.

31 Vocational English Students will receive a letter
An interview will be conducted to assess their suitability for this pathway. Note that this pathway leads to Vocational English VCE Units 3/4 (non-scored) in Year 12 Students will not be eligible for an ATAR

34 Meeting the English requirement of the VCE
Must satisfactorily complete three units of English studies These units can come from: - English units 1 – 4 - English Language units 1 - 4 - Literature units 1 – 4 - Foundation English units 1/2

35 Meeting the English requirement of the VCE
Two of these must be at the Unit 3/4 level (new for 2018) To receive an ATAR you must do either English units 3/4, English Language units 3/4 or Literature units 3/4 You can choose to study additional English studies to the English option you select to meet the English requirement of the VCE

43 Consider your Maths choice carefully!
Pay attention to the Maths Pathway suggested by your Maths teacher It is based on their knowledge of yours skills and maths ability The idea of ‘having a go’ is usually not successful There is limited opportunity to change Maths pathways during the year

44 VCE elective choices Typical Year 11 VCE student completes studies in a further five subjects Subject choice is yours – there are no restrictions like Year 10 Most will be VCE Unit 1/2 studies VCE Units 3/4 studies available to some students Some will be studying a Units 3/4 study having completed Units 1/2 this year

45 VCE Units 3/4 studies Few Year 10 students are ready to complete studies at the VCE Units 3/4 level!

46 VCE Units 3/4 studies You will need to:
- complete Section 5 of the selection guide - show a high level of academic success in relevant Year 10 subjects - display excellent work habits Meeting with a Deputy Headmaster or Head of Senior School after you have submitted you 2018 choices

50 My other choices within the VCE Program
Vocational Education and Training (VET) certificates available to some students Some will be studying Year 2 of a VET certificate having completed Year 1 this year S only VCE

51 S only VCE For those whose goal is to:
Successfully meet all outcomes for each of the VCE units they intend studying, Attain the Victorian Certificate of Education and Move directly into employment (possibly before the end of the 2018 school year)

52 S only VCE Still required to study one of the Religious Education options Required to participate in, and complete, all class and coursework activities and assessment as per any other VCE student. May negotiate to complete SAC and SAT tasks under alternative conditions and Do not sit the end of year exam.

53 S only VCE students are not eligible for an ATAR.

54 VET in schools – Vocational Education and Training
VET in schools programs allow you to combine nationally recognised training with the VCE This improves access to a wider range of post-school pathways – apprenticeships, traineeships, TAFE or tertiary study Each recognised VET in schools program has full status within the VCE Units 1-4 structure

55 VET in schools – Vocational Education and Training
Three types of programs: - VCE VET courses at St Patrick’s - VCE VET courses through the Ballarat Schools Cluster - School Based Apprenticeships (must be in the Applied Learning Program)

56 Internal VET courses VCE VET courses at St Patrick’s:
- Building and Construction - Engineering Studies - Hospitality (Kitchen Operations) - Music (Tech Prod and Performance) - Sport and Recreation - Employment Pathways Some classes conducted ‘outside’ of normal class time Two-year programs

57 Note re Building and Construction:
In order to complete the full Certificate II Building and Construction students must use two of their elective choices in both semesters of year one. This is a consequence of the significant number of nominal teaching hours required to deliver the full certificate

58 Note re Building and Construction:
Students studying Certificate II Building and Construction will therefore not be permitted to study any additional VCE Unit 3/4 subject.

You will need to: - complete Section 7 of the Guide - demonstrate an interest - show success in relevant Year subjects - display high level of work habits Arrange a meeting with the relevant VET teacher

62 External VET courses See Mr John Sullivan or Mr Meehan for more information A number of VCE VET courses are offered through the Ballarat Schools Cluster

63 External VET courses Parents of students who elect to participate in any external Ballarat Schools Cluster VETiS course will be required to pay the difference between the course cost and the Catholic Education Funding for that particular course. This cost difference could range between $750 to $2,000

64 External VET courses Students who withdraw from their VETiS Program after week three of Term One will still be required to pay the full fees of the course.

65 Australian School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships (SBAT)
A school-based apprenticeship or traineeship arrangement that combines part-time work, structured training with a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) and school studies

66 SBAT SBAT typically require students to complete one or two days of work and/or training per week off-site. This impacts significantly on your timetable and ability to access and complete class work.

67 SBAT Therefore, students completing a SBAT will be enrolled in the Applied Learning Program Will be required to negotiate any missed class work with teachers and work independently to meet all timelines. This aspect of any SBAT needs to be considered carefully before committing to any SBAT.

SBAT areas have been approved by industry bodies and the VCAA for students undertaking the VCE in the following industries/areas:

70 Other options within VCE
University Enhancement Studies Informal work placements: Negotiated non-accredited work placements to accompany VCE units VCE taken over three years Starting with less than a ‘full-load’

71 VCE Testamurs VCE Testamurs are new forms of recognition of achievement within the current senior secondary qualifications of VCE. There are two qualifications: - VCE Baccalaureate and - Industry Pathways

72 Applied Learning Program

73 Applied Learning - VCAL
Designed for students whose preferred learning style is more ‘hands–on’. The aim of the VCAL is to give students the necessary skills to equip them well for employment, training at the TAFE level and to support students seeking an apprenticeship or traineeship.

74 VCAL The VCAL gives students literacy and numeracy skills, practical work-related experiences and an opportunity to build personal skills that are important for life and work

75 VCAL Three levels of the certificate: Foundation Intermediate and,
Senior The decision as to which level you will study at will be determined as part of the application process.

76 VCAL Students will complete studies in the following strands: Literacy
Numeracy Personal Development Skills Work Related Skills and, Industry Specific Skills (which might include a VET certificate, a SBA, or another recognised certificate).

77 VCAL Students will be required to complete individual and group projects as part of their VCAL program. As for all other Year 11 students, boys participating in the VCAL program will be required to study Religious Education and attend all Pastoral Care sessions.

78 VCAL requirements Must satisfactorily complete all outcomes in all strands. VCAL uses outcomes based assessment therefore, students must be able to show that they have met each outcome at least twice in order to qualify as ‘Competent’ in the particular outcome.

79 VCAL requirements VET, SBA or certificates courses, are required to meet the Industry Specific Skills component of Intermediate and Senior VCAL. VCAL students do not sit formal written exams for assessment. Instead, school-based practical tasks are designed to enable the student to demonstrate competencies in ‘real-life’ situations.

You are required to submit your 2018 Year 11 course of study and program details using Web Preferences (the online subject submission portal). You will be ed a link to Web Preferences, along with detailed instructions.

Your parents will also be sent a similar explaining the submission procedure. Please note: A parent and student signed copy of the 2018 Web Preferences Preference Receipt is to be submitted with this Subject Selection Guide.
