1 SPD II 1 for LV Power (AC/DC)
Welcome to this introduction to the SPD II 1 series of surge protectors for Low Voltage power applications, including Photovoltaic installations. Surge Protection SPD II 1 for LV Power (AC/DC)

The SPD II 1 range described here covers low voltage distribution applications – protecting a.c. nominal voltages between 120 and 480V - single and 3 phase – making it suitable for most control panel power input applications. The construction of SPD II is in Din rail mounted format, with molded base with finger-safe electrical connections and pluggable replaceable arrestor. The internal varistor (or MOV) – which is the transient voltage limiting element – has a thermal fuse which acts as a circuit disconnector in the event of the MOV leaking. When the disconnector operates, it shows by a red indicator on the front that the MOV is ready to be replaced. At the same time, the disconnector operates an internal relay, which provides an output signal for remote status indication, via the pluggable connectors fitted in the top of the base element. It provides protection by being fitted electrically between the conductor to be protected, and a good quality ground. The diagram on the left illustrates how the internal MOV, thermal fuse and relay components are connected together – and operate when leakage current is detected passing through the MOV. To minimize the wiring on the ground side – a jumper is inserted to link the ground connection of each module – so that a single ground wire can be used. 6 SPD II 1 R – new arrester technology (1)
For non-transient over-voltages the TC(G) circuit controls the current (reducing it to mA) and thereby isolates and protects the MOV. For transients to be discharged the GDT and MOV work together In some SPDs it is possible for the MOV to prematurely wear out. An example of this is when the conductor being protected is part of a poorly regulated supply – and where the nominal voltage can increase above the MCOV of the MOV for a long period of time – i.e. not just a transient. In this condition the MOV will turn on, and drain current to ground. This is wasting energy, and will also cause the MOV to overheat and wear out in a shorter period of time. The internal construction of the SPD II has additional components which are designed to ensure that the MOV will only discharge current to ground during a transient voltage event.

7 SPD II 1 R – new arrester technology (2)
Spring-loaded, rotating barrier prevents arcing during disconnection of MOV. This in turn prevents hot spots being created in the MOV housing – which would have otherwise added to MOV wear and reduced it’s operating life.
