3 The Problem(s) There is a widening digital divide today
Technology used to be an option one could avoid or get by without No longer optional – for education, employment, health, safety, and life. IT-like interfaces are being built into every job (even janitors) But many in population can’t use it because of barriers due to disability, literacy, digital literacy and aging Very diverse – many groups – each with tails Access solutions are often so complex to set up that people who need them can’t use them Users, Schools, Libraries, Public access points, Companies

4 We have something of a Perfect Storm coming;
where just as access to digital interfaces is becoming mandatory for meaningful participation, independence, and self sustenance, and employment we find that we not only are nowhere near providing access to everyone who needs it but we are actually losing ground due to technical proliferation across platforms, Introduction of cloud computing increasing product churn (breaking existing solutions) and compounding this problem – we have decreasing social resources to address it and an inability to effectively serve the tails of these populations (and the tails of the tails)

5 Yet if access is mandatory –
Anyone who cannot access ICT will be unable to participate in the world we are building If only 5 percent can't understand and access that is one in every 20 people or 16 million people in the US.

7 In order for ICT to not create greater inequity
we need access/usability solutions to be Simpler Cost less per person (costs less to make and market) Work across all the ICT people encounter
