PROCESS District Goal: Review K-12 Health Curriculum to assure vertical alignment and determine if revisions are needed. Process: Health Education Curriculum Analysis Tool (HECAT) The HECAT is a curriculum framework tool developed by the Center for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) in partnership with health education experts representing state education agencies, school districts, schools, colleges, and national organizations. The HECAT is aligned with the National Health Education Standards and is based on the Characteristics of Effective Health Education Curricula that help young people adopt and maintain health-enhancing behaviors.

How have we utilized the HECAT?

Analyzed our current curriculum and identified the skills & performance indicators of what students currently know and are able to do as a result of our curriculum and instruction. Researched best practices in health education to identify strengths and gaps within our current curriculum to make informed decisions and to guide the necessary revisions. Guarantee vertical articulation K-12 aligned with the National Health Education Standards.

Data results from the Center for Disease Control, National Center for Health Statistics reports the leading causes of death by Age Group. Gaps in the current curriculum were identified in the topics of Personal Safety, Injury Prevention and Violence Prevention Ages 5-9 Ages 10-14 Ages 15-24 Ages 25-34 1.Unintentional Injury 1. Next Steps District Goal : Beginning the revisions on the K-12 Health Curriculum based on the cross-walk between National Health Standards and NCPS Curriculum. Drafting a scope and sequence K-12 with an emphasis on K-4 units of study. Drafting units of study with a focus on: information gathered from last years analysis. Personal Safety Injury Prevention Violence Prevention Ensuring all health information related to our curriculum will be transparent to parents and the community on district and teacher websites
