1 Energy Security Energy Consumption Future?

2 Energy Security Energy Security Energy Choices depend on…
The ability to secure affordable, reliable and sufficient energy supplies for the needs of a particular country Can be a tough choice for nations (Do you buy foreign of produce domestically?) Energy Choices depend on… Availability of supply Technological Developments Politics Economics Cultural Attitudes Sustainability Environment Economic Prosperity will always require energy, but no matter what we do, what will eventually happen to nonrenewable energy resources?

3 Energy Choice Examples
Ukraine-Russia Initially Russia exported gas to Ukraine for a low cost In 2006 Russia felt this relationship was being abused and cut supplies Secure? USA Shale Oil “Tight Oil”: stuck in rocks and too expensive to get out But…new tech…high oil prices…since 2008 US tight oil production has increased from 6x10^5 to 3.5x10^6 barrels a day. Could turn the USA from a net importer to an exporter Wind Turbines in Denmark Produces over 30% of energy from wind Linked to neighboring countries so Denmark can buy or sell if needed

4 Energy Resources All energy comes from the SUN!!!!! Fossil Fuels
We just don’t always rely on obtaining it through plants/photosynthesis Fossil Fuels Stored solar energy Non –renewable Compressed, decomposed remains of life from millions of years ago Emit CO2 when burned When will we run out of fossil fuels? Coal: 230 years Natural Gas: 170 years Oil: 100 years But what if the rate at which we use them increases?

5 Energy Resources

6 Fossil Fuels and CO2 Emissions
CO2 emissions per unit of energy produced for various energy resources.

7 Energy Consumption We continue to use non-renewable fuels at an increasing rate Oil Prices peaked in 2008 at $145 per barrel. (How much today?) The EU produces less tan 7% of its energy from renewables. Future? Hydrogen economy? Fusion? Renewables?
