2. What is sacred space?
Religion impacts the arrangement of human activities on the landscape
Religion impacts different scales of land including small parcels of land and entire communities
A religion’s beliefs is a reason for how elements are distributed on the landscape
Small scale includes burial practices, marriage traditions, and sacred space inside the home for worship

3. Hinduism (Ethnic Religion)
Death:
Hindus cremate the person instead of burial practices
This is because they believe the spirit will not rest in peace
Cremation is considered an act of purification
Originated from the nomad fearing the dead would come back to life, or be attacked by wild animals
Cremations is also believed to free the soul from the body in order to reincarnate

4. Hinduism
Marriage:
"Hindu ceremonies believe this is not only a marriage of the couple – but a marriage for the families."
Traditional Hindu wedding rituals can last for days
Hinduism does allow divorce, however, it is an alien term to them and is a social taboo.
In history women are not allowed to divorce or leave the husband
The bride’s parents and family is responsible for the wedding
Worship area in the home:
A shrine is always designated in all traditional hindu households
Pujas and rituals are performed at these shrines
Only light a lamp facing the east

5. Christianity Marriage & Divorce: An example of an universal religion.
Wooden crosses are usually found in Christian homes to symbolize his death and sacrifice for our sins.
Marriage & Divorce:
Protestant: Marriage is a contract but it can be broken, divorce is discouraged but allowed and remarriage is permitted.
Catholic: Marriage is seen as a unbreakable bond, remarriage is not permitted after a divorce.
Orthodox: Marriage is seen as an union between a man and a women, divorce is permitted only in cases of adultery.

6. Christianity continued
Death procedure:
Protestant: Take place in a church, minister starts and ends the sermon, dark clothes are not mandatory and cameras are not restricted. Hymns and songs are sung throughout the service. They also support cremation
Catholic: For most of it’s history, the Catholics banned cremation, but in 1963, the pope repealed the law, the jar of ashes though must be placed in an urn (sacred place) and placed next to a Easter candle.
Orthodox: Cremation is forbidden because it is looked as a violent act to treat the body after death, traditional burial is the only method of burial.

7. Islam A universal religion Marriage in Islam:
Marriage in Islam is considered as a legal contract between the groom and the bride
Two Muslims must be witness to the signing of the contract
In the Shia branch, a temporary marriage or zawāj al-mutʻah is permitted
The marriage is usually held in the groom’s household and is traditionally based

8. Death in Islam
When a Muslim dies, it is recommended that they be buried immediately after death
The body of the deceased will be washed by family members “Ghusl”
Before the burial, the body will be shrouded “Kafan”
The body is wrapped under three layers of inexpensive material
Finally, the body is transported to a mosque, and the community will have a funeral prayer “Salat al-Janazah” and the body will be buried in a cemetery

9. Judaism Ethnic religion
The Star of David and the menorah are common household symbols of Judaism.
Burial
Burial is conducted following a certain procedure, with the guidance and blessing of a rabbi.
In Israel there are certain areas designated as burial grounds.
Marriage
Marriage procedure is conducted based on the bible.
Proper procedure is required for an official marriage.

10. Buddhism Death: Both cremation and burial practices are allowed.’
Cremation, however, is a more traditional practice
Surroundings should be “simple, solemn, and dignified”
Marriage:
Is referred to as a personal duty
It is neither holy or unholy
Buddhists go to local temples to get blessings from the monks
Worship Area in the home:
Usually a room for worship
When worshiping for nirvana buddhists face a picture or symbol of Buddha himself
