Report 72.0 - 2nd Quarter Release -
Johannesburg 13 August 2013
2
General International Developments:
Q US Trends: Slight decrease. Newspaper circulation declined again during the six months ended March 31, but the dip was slight, a major change from a few years ago, when print circulation dove sharply every time new data was released. Weekday daily decreased by 0.7 percent during the reporting period. Sunday circulation was down more, off 1.4 percent, The newspaper circ. declines have eased since the AAM adopted new measurement guidelines for 2012, including the addition of digital editions, which include tablet or smartphone apps, PDF replicas, metered or restricted- access websites, or e-reader editions. News orientated magazines continue to lose single copy sales.
3
Local Developments: Marketing Association awakes. Prompted by the announced intention by NAB to withdraw from SAARF the MA has reacted firmly to the thinly veiled threats to withhold the media owners research contribution. Could this result in clarity in terms of : “whose money is it? Absolutely, albeit the solution could be a shared funding. Could this renewed marketer interests spread to other platforms? Probably. Could we see a completely new SAARF as we go into 2014? Certainly. Are Marketers going to play a more significant role in shaping AMPS. RAMS, TAMS etc? Without a doubt.
4
General Local Developments:
TV FTA Explosion of options for 2013 / 2014 All indications are that SA marketers will be faced with 30+ FTA stations in and many more on Pay networks. The consequence will be: Harder to build reach on this medium. Increased cost of reach. Opportunity will be created for other high reach media platforms to cash in on the chaos. OOH Has been under measured. AC Nielsen has been revealed for under measuring the advertising investment in OOH. The suggestion is that the quantum is as much as 50%.
5
Rule Amendments effective 1st January 2013:
Amendment to definition of Single Copy Sales: “Sales to the distributor /seller must be on a sale or return basis”

Observations: General:
Perhaps it’s time for publishers to engage proactively with the industry and for print bodies to start promoting print. The recent Future of Media Conference highlighted the level of miscommunication and the amount of mischievous reporting being spread amongst marketers regarding the future of print Print is alive but struggling in may areas and for a variety of reasons…apart from reader choice. In summary Q reveals: Daily Newspaper circulations declining…driven by inland titles with readers spoilt for choice. That said, the biggest declining titles Q2 on Q1 are down less than 5%. Weekly Newspapers appear stable, but Ilanga is down 16% YOY and 8.5% on Q1. Weekend Newspaper performance shows slowing rates of decline. Vernaculat titles still up 16% on but concerning to see 23% drop in Ilanga performance.
52
Observations: Local Newspapers continue to be stable.
Hybrids up 4.9%...impressive given the conditions. Free Newspapers reflect a stable category position, albeit vital. Alex Pioneer +34%; Alex News -32% Waterkloof Gazette +32% Consumer Magazines are down some 13%..which is disappointing. Woman's General dropped 4.2% after two consecutive periods of category stability. Kuier +33% True Love – 24%, Real – 27% Rooi Riose + 17% and Sarie -5% In the next 90 days, much of what happens from a print advertising income perspective next year will be decided as briefs, strategies and final presentations are approved. If there is going to be change it needs to happen now.
