1 Fundamentals of the Faith Lesson 1 Inspiration – Part 1
1 Corinthians 4:14-17

2 A closer look at 2 Timothy 3:16-17
All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work. 1. Paul affirms the inspiration of the scriptures - “All scripture is given by inspiration of God…” 2. Makes references to the use of the inspired scriptures – “…is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness…” 3. The result of this inspiration and the use of it –”…that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work”

3 False theories of Inspiration
A Good book Modernism Partially inspired-sometimes Man’s interpretation of inspiration Good book – there are some that deny there is anything “special” about the Bible. To these the Bible is just another book-a good book, perhaps but a book of human origin. Modernism – claims that the Bible is a compilation of previously existing human documents. Partially inspired-sometimes – Some claim that the bible is miraculously inspired in some places, or in a measure, or to a certain extent. We ask: in what places? In what measure? To what extent? Who decides? This clearly denies the inspiration of the Bible. Man’s interpretation of inspiration – some hold the idea that God (somehow) bestowed upon certain men indefinite, vague thoughts, and allowed these men to place the “thoughts in their own words.” So, we ask: what does the Bible say with regard to its inspiration?

4 Inspiration – Promise & Fulfillment
You will be brought before governors and kings for My sake, as a testimony to them and to the Gentiles. 19 But when they deliver you up, do not worry about how or what you should speak. For it will be given to you in that hour what you should speak; The Lord promised to certain ones miraculous inspiration. Mt 10:18-20 John 16:13-14

5 Inspiration – Promise & Fulfillment
20 for it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father who speaks in you. Matthew 10:18-20 The Lord promised to certain ones miraculous inspiration. Mt 10:18-20 John 16:13-14

6 Inspiration – Promise & Fulfillment
However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. 14 He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you. John 16:13-14 The Lord promised to certain ones miraculous inspiration. Mt 10:18-20 John 16:13-14

7 Inspiration – Promise & Fulfillment
And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. Act 2:4 Fulfillment of Miraculous Inspiration The Lord kept His promise. On Pentecost of Acts 2, these very men to whom the promise was (Acts 2:4)

8 Inspiration – Promise & Fulfillment
For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call." Acts 2:39 Fulfillment of Miraculous Inspiration This verse is a good illustration of the miraculous inspiration that Peter spoke with. Its significance certainly encompasses salvation of the Gentiles.

9 Inspiration – Promise & Fulfillment
The next day, as they went on their journey and drew near the city, Peter went up on the housetop to pray, about the sixth hour. 10 Then he became very hungry and wanted to eat; but while they made ready, he fell into a trance 11 and saw heaven opened and an object like a great sheet bound at the four corners, descending to him and let down to the earth. Fulfillment of Miraculous Inspiration Peter Himself-at the time did not believe that the gospel was for the Gentiles. In Acts 10:9-16, God revealed this to Peter while he was in a trance, this he did three times.

10 Inspiration – Promise & Fulfillment
12 In it were all kinds of four- footed animals of the earth, wild beasts, creeping things, and birds of the air. 13 And a voice came to him, " Rise, Peter; kill and eat."14 But Peter said, "Not so, Lord! For I have never eaten anything common or unclean."15 And a voice spoke to him again the second time, " What God has cleansed you must not call common." Fulfillment of Miraculous Inspiration

11 Inspiration – Promise & Fulfillment
16 This was done three times. And the object was taken up into heaven again. Acts 10:9-16 Fulfillment of Miraculous Inspiration

12 Inspiration – Promise & Fulfillment
as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue, 2 Peter 1:3 Fulfillment of Miraculous Inspiration Its no wonder Peter said what he did in 2 Peter 1:3. Paul explains things more in Galatians 1:11-12-on NEXT SLIDE

13 Inspiration – Promise & Fulfillment
But I make known to you, brethren, that the gospel which was preached by me is not according to man. 12 For I neither received it from man, nor was I taught it, but it came through the revelation of Jesus Christ. Galatians 1:11-12 Fulfillment of Miraculous Inspiration Paul explains things more in Galatians 1:11-12 By revelation of Jesus Christ, the message was from the Father and revealed to them through Christ. The N.T. writers affirm that the Lord kept His promise of inspiration from Christ to the Apostles through the Holy Spirit.

14 Inspiration – God & Authority
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Genesis 1:1 All original authority is in God the Father. Genesis 1:1

15 Inspiration – God & Authority
The sea is His, for He made it; And His hands formed the dry land. Psalm 95:5 All original authority is in God the Father.

16 Inspiration – God & Authority
…to the living God, who made the heaven, the earth, the sea, and all things that are in them, Act 14:15b He is the living God…

17 Inspiration – God & Authority
God, who made the world and everything in it, since He is Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples made with hands. Acts 17:24 He is the God that has made the world… - He is the creator – our makers and our sustainer. It is in Him that we live and move and have our being. Because He is what HE is, all original authority – source authority – is in Him.

18 Inspiration – The Son & Authority
So when the centurion and those with him, who were guarding Jesus, saw the earthquake and the things that had happened, they feared greatly, saying, " Truly this was the Son of God!" Matthew 27:54 The books of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John were written to convince men that Jesus of Nazareth is the Christ, the son of the living God-the Messiah about whom the O.T. message has been written. God said that Jesus was His Son. Jesus claimed that God was His Father. These writers set forth irrefutable evidences designed to prove His claim. Matthew 27:54

19 Inspiration – The Son & Authority
And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, " All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Matthew 28:18 Bu, what is so important about this fact? Why prove that He is the Son of God? The answer is: as such, He was (and He is) in position to be heir of all authority from the Father. He meth with His disciples upon a mountain in Galilee and confidently affirmed in – Mt 28:18. Go gave authority to the Son-the authority to deal with the problem of the sins of men.

20 Conclusion If the Bible isn’t from God than it must be from men.
If the Bible is from men it cannot save. However, since its from God, obedience is of eternal consequence. If the Bible isn’t from God than it must be from men. If the Bible is from men it cannot save. However, since its from God, obedience is of eternal consequence.
