Presentation on theme: "Compounds, Elements and Mixtures"— Presentation transcript:

1 Compounds, Elements and Mixtures
Define compound. Give an example of a compound. Define element. Give an example of an element. Define Mixture. Give an example of a mixture. 7. What are two physical properties of iron?

2 Review Continued What are two physical properties of sulfur?
9. How is iron sulfide different from the 2 elements that make it up? When iron sulfide was formed, is it a physical or a chemical change? Why? 11. If you mixed the iron and sulfur together, would that be a chemical or a physical change?

3 Review Continued Mixture of Compound?
a. Can be separated by physical means. b. No definite chemical composition. c. Maintains same properties as original compounds. Draw the Bohr Diagram of Nitrogen. Mixture, compound or element? a. salt water b. salt c. phosphorus d. hydrochloric acid e. einsteinium f. sugar g. hydrogen peroxide h. carbon monoxide

4 Answers Define compounds.
Two or more elements that are chemically combined. Give an example of a compound. Water, NaCl, Sugar…. Define element. Smallest part of an element that has all of the properties of that element. 4. Give an example of an element. Any of the 112 on the periodic table. Define Mixture. 2 or more substances that are mixed together but NOT chemically combined. Give an example of a mixture. Salt Water, Sugar water…. 7. What are two physical properties of iron? High luster, malleable, ductile, good conductor of heat and electricity.

5 Answers continued What are two physical properties of sulfur?
Low luster, non malleable, non-ductile, brittle and good insulator. How is iron sulfide different from the 2 elements that make it up? Now a compound, Odor change, shiny, malleable. When iron sulfide was formed, is it a physical or a chemical change? Why? Chemical Change. Created something new. If you mixed the iron and sulfur together, would that be a chemical or a physical change? How do you know? Physical Change. Can be separated by physical means.

6 Answers continued Mixture of Compound?
a. Can be separated by physical means. Mixture b. No definite chemical composition. c. Maintains same properties as original compounds. Draw the Bohr Diagram of nitrogen.

7 Answers continued Mixture, compound or element? a. salt water Mixture
b. salt Compound c. phosphorus Element d. hydrochloric acid e. Einsteinium Element f. sugar Compound g. hydrogen peroxide h. carbon monoxide
