What are we doing? Look at format and quality of a variety of information sources Learn about evaluating information Will try to adopt an awareness of the ‘information life cycle’ when doing research for ‘all but the paper assignment’ FYSM 1101 Location is Everything How are we going to do this? Examine articles from a variety of information sources. I am going to ask you to think critically about the time it takes to create the sources. Then we’ll look at the process behind information creation that determines shape, content, quality.

Exercise for Information Life Cycle
Divide into 4 groups Each group will spend minutes at each work station Each group will examine/read sources of information on a topic about Toronto’s bid to host the Olympic games, or similar topic Answer questions on the Worksheet Write the title and/or citation of the source on the worksheet before leaving work station Move as a group to the next workstation when asked to do so FYSM 1101 Location is Everything Review the instructions with the class.

Review of Work station exercise questions
Begin with Work station #1 Review sources and answers on work sheet Discuss ‘rigor’ Style, format, time to publish FYSM 1101 Location is Everything Let’s look at your answers from Group #1 for the sources or information products at this work station. Can you elaborate on your answers? Do you know what I mean when I say rigor? Rigor is an important characteristic of information products. It is the quality of thoroughness, accuracy and strictness of a source. This can include the author’s credentials, how the author got the information that he/she is writing about, and who reviewed the source prior to its publication. For example, Work Station #1 consists of newspaper articles (#2 Blogs, #3 Magazine articles, #4 Journal articles) What are the general characteristics, style and form of the newspaper format? Prompts to lead discussion: Written by a reporter or journalist (writer, member of the public, professor) Written for a general audience (specific audience) Not peer-reviewed Can consist of facts or opinions about a topic When was it written Review Blog entries – can be written immediately following an event or a few days later Review Magazine articles – written during the same week as an event (Macleans), or during the month of the event (if a monthly publication) Review Journal articles – could take a year or more to write the article and have is published because it is peer reviewed Script: You are often asked to find and use scholarly journal articles as references in your essays? What are the characteristics of this information product? Is there any difference between on-line and print journals? What does peer reviewed mean?

Learning Goal for Information Life Cycle
Students will learn that information is produced and disseminated in different formats and that the accuracy and thoroughness (rigor) of information is often related to the length of time it takes to produce the information, its final form and the way it is shared with others.
