Letters & Sounds Phase 2 Learning 31 phonemes/sounds–
4 sounds per week Blending (putting sounds together to read) Segmenting (splitting word into component sounds to write) Key words (some phonetic and some tricky) *Progress through the phases (3, 4 and 5 will vary dependent on which group/level your child is working at)

Early Reading Strategies
Key skills to rehearse Discussion of front cover – title/author/illustrator/ blurb; prediction; tracking of text (“Magic Finger”); likes/dislikes. Searchlights – to decode! Picture cues; sounds knowledge; key words recognition; context.

Different schemes within each colour band Ongoing/formative assessment to ensure children are reading at the correct level and to determine when they are ready to move on - benchmarking

Reading at Home IT MAKES A BIG DIFFERENCE!
Home readers are at a level of 95+% accuracy rate, therefore should be fluent (rehearsal) Your child will read at a level above (90% accuracy) in school during guided reading sessions

Practising key words – Key ring for phase 2 32 key words – provided in sets of up to 5, when your child is secure with 4 out 5 words a new set will be given Phase 3, 4, & 5 word cards activity packs
