Estuary - Semi-enclosed, tidal, coastal body of water open to the sea in which fresh & salt water mix.

4 Estuary Types 1. Drowned River Valley Formed by the sea level rising & filling an existing river valley. Ex. – Chesapeake Bay

4 Estuary Types 2. Bar-Built Estuary Forms when a shallow lagoon or bay is protected from the ocean by a sand bar or barrier island. Ex. – Outer Banks

4 Estuary Types 3. Tectonic Caused by the folding or faulting of land. Found along major fault lines, like the San Francisco Bay area in California.

4 Estuary Types 4. Fjords U-shaped valleys created when retreating glaciers cut deep in the earth. Ex. Bay of Fundy

Where would we find fjords? Northern Europe, Alaska & Canada.
