Starts at the beginning of the second trimester Ten sessions, ~ 2 hours each Comfortable, confidential setting More time for education than traditional care Learning from peers Takes focus away from the individual doctor-patient relationship Empowering for patients Normalizes the pregnancy process

5 Group Prenatal Care at United Family Medicine
FQHC in St. Paul, MN Neighborhood clinic serving a socioeconomically and culturally diverse population Residency program started in 1993 18 residents and 11 staff physicians provide OB care Average of 30 deliveries per month 5/2014: staff and residents trained in CenteringPregnancyTM 6/2014: First CenteringPregnancyTM groups began 11/2014: First CenteringPregnancyTM deliveries 2014 – 2016: 35% of UFM deliveries receive care in groups

Decreases the rate of preterm and low birth weight babies Nearly eliminates racial disparities Increases breastfeeding rates Leads to better pregnancy spacing High patient and provider satisfaction
