2. Before you go
Download the LifeScanner app from the iTunes store (Free download)
You will need to use it on an Apple device with GPS

3. Step 1 Open the app Click on the contribute button
It will ask you to register which you must do to submit samples

4. Step 1
When it says Scan vial, hold the vial with the barcode showing in front of the camera.

5. Step 2
When it asks for a Specimen Photo take a picture of your fish.

6. Step 3
Click Capture Specimen and click the button showing you have completed the steps (you will collect the fish later)

7. Step 4
When it asks for a Location Photo take a picture of THE NAME of your fish from the store display or packaging.

8. Step 5 Close the Please contribute screen.
On the main menu, click on Scientific info

9. Step 6
Click Additional Photos and take photos of any certification symbols, the price sticker or price sign and the UPC code

10. Step 7
Under Habitat select Food

11. Step 8
Under Species type the name of the fish from the packaging or store sign

12. Step 9
Under Notes type the name of the store the fish came from, the processing level (e.g., fresh, frozen, whole, fillet), and the country of origin (if available)

13. Step 10
When you have entered all of the information and collected your sample, click the Submit button.
After this you can use the app to track the progress of your sample as it gets DNA barcoded.

14. Collect the fish sample
Unscrew the cap.
Cut a pea-sized sample of fish using a clean knife or scissors and put the sample into the vial.

15. Collect Fish Sample
Screw the lid back on the vial and shake the vial to immerse the fish in the liquid.

16. Bring your fish to school!
