Focusing on the Transition from high school to college

Why focus on the first-year transition at DVC?
We want to retain our students: - Only % of First Year students return for second semester We want to help support our students who are struggling academically We want to help our students succeed: Approximately 70% are underprepared for college level math and English and don’t make it through transferable courses

Cohort Programs P.U.M.A. Center houses:
MESA Puente Umoja The center serves as a community for students, a place to study, and a place to build mentoring and leadership opportunities.

College Now The program is a collaboration between the Mt. Diablo Unified School District and DVC, offering a dual enrollment option for high school students through a College and Career Access Pathways (CCAP) agreement. Target population = 11th grader Goals: Help students identify appropriate career pathways Expose students to academic opportunities and courses not available at comprehensive high schools Provide students the support services needed to be successful in high school and college courses Give students a solid foundation of skills required to be a successful college student Emphasize that college is accessible to all students Give underserved students an opportunity to pursue higher education

College Now Inaugural Year
Fall 2016 Cohort – “the Mighty 19” Representing the following high schools: College Park Concord Mt. Diablo Northgate Ygnacio Valley 12 females; 7 males About 75% on free-and-reduced lunch Most are first-generation to college Spring 2017 – “the additional 9” 5 females; 5 males Contact: Mandy Ganz, Counselor

First Year Experience (FYE)
The goals of FYE programs are to: Prepare students for the transition from high school to college Improve persistence, retention and success of first year students in an equitable and inclusive way Make First Year students feel part of the community (supported and welcomed) so they succeed academically and emotionally/personally

FYE Pilot Fall 2016 For all first year students:
Welcome Day (August 12 & 13, 2016) PHC = 398 students SRC = 76 Total = 474 Student Success Workshops Embedded workshops in developmental English classes Fall 2016 FYE Program: Learning Community with English, GE class (Psych at Pleasant Hill, History at San Ramon) and Counseling course PHC = 48 SRC = 21 Future Goals: Expanded learning communities Peer mentoring Hold the date for Welcome Day 2017 = August 11 (SRC) & 12 (PHS), 2017 Summer Bridge (stay tuned for summer 2017)
