1 Celebrations and traditions : what for?
Are Russia, America and Britain the countries of traditions? Are these traditions different or alike? Are celebrations a part of our life? What activities are people involved in at different celebrations? Do people have different points of view on celebrations? What do people like about celebrations?

2 If there are not holidays and traditions our life will be boring and imperfect.

6 The Boat Race In March A rowing race between the universities of
Oxford and Cambridge. On the river Thames in London (7,2 km).

7 Pancake Day In March The last day before Lent. Pancake race-running
while holding a pancake in a frying pan. Competitors have to throw it in the air and catch it again in the pan.

8 The London Marathon One of the biggest marathons in the world.
Each year about 30,000 people start the race and about 25,000 finish. Raise money for charity.

9 Trooping The Colour The second Saturday in June.
Celebrates the Queen’s official birthday. Lots of marching, military music and the soldiers are dressed in colourful uniforms.

10 Thanksgiving in November
Families make roast turkey, a sweet sauce and pumpkin pies.

11 Flag Day June 14th a day when people fly the US flag, remembering the day in 1777 when the US flag ( also Stars and Stripes) was officially accepted and first used.

12 Independence Day also the fourth of July
the main holiday in the United States, celebrating the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776.

13 Groundhog day February 2nd an annual celebration in the US,
It is believed that when a groundhog emerges from his den and sees his shadow on that day, there will be six more weeks of winter. If the groundhog fails to see his shadow, he takes this as a sign of spring and will remain above ground.
