FREEWAY DRIVING
2
What is a Freeway? A divided road with at least 2 lanes going in each direction that are designed to carry heavy traffic efficiently and rapidly.
3
Safe and efficient ways to travel.
Driving on freeways is one of the most... Safe and efficient ways to travel. Freeways include: 1. Toll roads (turnpikes) 2. Parkways 3. Expressways 4. Interstates/Highways
4
ADVANTAGES OF FREEWAYS
1. No intersections 2. Medians or barriers (no head on collisions) 3. No pedestrians 4. Fixed objects kept far from the road 5. Fast and efficient
5
DISADVANTAGES OF FREEWAYS
1. Less time to react in an emergency. 2. Escape routes are limited. 3. More traffic. 4. High speeds = more fatalities
6
INTERCHANGES These are like “intersections”. Vehicles can cross over or under a freeway and can enter and leave without interfering with the flow of traffic. DIAMOND CLOVERLEAF TRUMPET
7
Entering Freeways On Ramp
Gives you time to evaluate traffic as you prepare to merge onto the freeway
8
ON-RAMP This is where we start to enter the freeway. These are one-way and are usually posted with an advisory speed limit sign. This particular on-ramp has a light to control the rate of traffic entering the freeway.
9
ON-RAMP Look over your left shoulder to check traffic and speed. This will determine how much we need to accelerate.
10
1. If you accidentally enter a ramp you do no want, continue: on the freeway and get off the next exit 2. Never: back up on a ramp 3. Avoid stopping whenever possible. Tap your brakes if you have to slow or stop. 4. Watch for: backups on the freeway or cars stopping on a ramp
11
ON-RAMP As we get closer to the acceleration lane, we should now look for a “gap” in traffic where we will merge.
12
Acceleration Lane A temporary extra lane that allows you to speed up to the flow of traffic before merging onto a freeway.
13
ACCELERATION LANE At this point we should have on our left signal, be building up speed, and checking our left mirror and blind spot. Make every effort to enter a freeway without: stopping. If you run out of acceleration lane, you should: pull onto the shoulder at the end of the acceleration lane.
14
Merging Area Try to enter the freeway at about the same speed as the first lane of traffic. Do not rely on mirrors. Cancel signal after entering.

16
ACCELERATION LANE If this were to happen and we could not merge, continue down the shoulder. NEVER STOP!
17
CHOOSING A LANE 4 Factors to Determine the Appropriate Lane
1. Volume of traffic 2. Type of vehicle you are driving 3. Your speed 4. Distance from intended exit
18
CHOOSING A LANE Center Lanes – Used for through traffic, smoothest lane of travel. Left Lane – “Passing lane”, fastest lane of travel, in NJ – Keep right except when passing. Right Lane – Slow lane, used for entering or preparing to exit.
19
SPACE CUSHION Remember to apply the 2 second rule! This is better.
Is this too close? Remember to apply the 2 second rule!
20
If conditions are wet or slippery, you should increase your following distance to 4 or more seconds.
21
When changing lanes, only change 1 lane at a time and be sure to use your turn signal and check your blind spots.
22
Use signal when changing lanes.
Exiting the Freeway Deceleration Lane An added lane that lets you slow down to the exit ramp speed without interfering with vehicles behind you. Use signal when changing lanes.

Special situations and problems
Weave Lane - a shared acceleration and deceleration lane. Rush hour traffic Highway hypnosis: inattentive, drowsy state Velocitation: thinking your vehicle is traveling slower than it is causes you to speed up The car exiting should yield to the car entering.
26
NJ has three tollways: NJ Turnpike, GS Parkway, and the AC Expressway.
Tolls are also required on most major bridges and all of the tunnels that connect NJ to PA and NY.
27
As you near the tollplaza, choose a lane and stay in that lane!
