What Stays (Mostly) the Same…
All of the combined degree programs Though they will now be called double degree programs There are no changes to the LLB component of these degrees Internal pathways will exist between the double degree and single degree programs

What is Changing The graduate LLB will no longer be available
Last intake: Session 3, A Juris Doctor will begin as a postgraduate degree in law, replacing the graduate LLB The distance LLB as a distinct program will become part of the new 4 year LLB program No age requirement Part time or full time

The New 4 yr LLB Essentially made up of the existing 72cp LLB, with the addition of a 24 cp qualifying major Seven qualifying majors available Allows for a focus on law, but has the advantage of rounding out legal studies with addition of units from other areas to ensure a broader, contextual understanding of the law

Our LLB Program Comprised of 15 compulsory units, 9 electives
Includes units required for admission to practice International Law PACE LAW115 is assessed on pass / fail basis to ensure students gain skills needed at outset These skills and capabilities are scaffolded throughout program Electives cover diverse areas of law

Criminology Available in the BA, BSocSci as well as LLB
Taught with PICT and Sociology Brings together topics on crime, social control and the legal system Career paths include: Criminal law and advocacy Corrective services and policing Intelligence and security

Public Policy, Law and Governance
Available in the BA as well as LLB Taught with Dept of Modern History, Politics and International Relations Focused on politics, law reform, policy development Career paths include: Advocacy and lobbying Government and public sector

Environmental Law and Management
Available in the BA as well as LLB Taught with Dept of Environment and Geography Encompasses local, national and international environmental law and policy; resource management Careers include: Environmental consultant Advocacy and policy advice at all levels of government

International Law and Global Governance
Available in the BA as well as LLB Taught with Dept of Modern History, Politics and International Relations Focus on international law and international relations in range of issue areas, as well as Australian law and policy in global context Careers include: Advisor in international organisations Foreign affairs

Media, Technology and the Law
Available in the BA as well as LLB Taught with Faculty of Science and Dept of Media, Music, Communications and Cultural Studies Provides understanding of legal dimensions to technology and new media in society Careers include: Media and technology consultant Talent manager

Commercial and Corporate Law
Available in the LLB only Taught with the Faculty of Business and Economics Allows studies in accounting, finance and economics Careers include: Policy and business advisors and analysts Contract managers

Social Justice Available in the BA, BSocSci and the LLB
Taught with different departments in the Faculty of Arts Brings together studies in law, sociology, cultural studies, gender and philosophy Careers include: Welfare and social policy advisors and advocates Strategic campaigner Public sector roles

Why Macquarie? Still provides interdisciplinarity, but a shorter time commitment overall PACE is still required Available internal or by distance Though not entirely online; there are compulsory oncampus sessions for each unit Available full time or part time Rather than two undergraduate degrees in 5 years, students can do the LLB and potentially a 1 year Masters program

Compared to other Sydney universities
No equivalents at UNSW or USyd UTS does straight LLB, which includes practical legal training requirements, but not the breadth of studies UWS has a straight LLB, but without a defined major so no distinct pathways beyond law and so more narrow

Entry Requirements for LLB programs
No prerequisite study at high school ATAR for double degree programs are 95-96 No advertised ATAR for the new 4 year LLB program, but anticipating 97

Pathways – Pre-Law Quota
Admission to the ‘Pre-Law’ Pathway allows students in non-law degrees to undertake introductory law units as a pathway to the Bachelor of Laws. Students approved for entry to the pre-law pathway will have waivers loaded to allow enrolment in LAW115, LAW104, LAW108, and LAW109. Upon satisfactory completion of these four units, students may then apply to transfer into either the Bachelor of Laws (96cp Single Award) or a Double Degree with Bachelor of Laws, subject to meting the transfer requirements set out below.

Pathways – Pre-Law Quota
New Students (commencing their studies at Macquarie in 2014) who have been admitted to a non-law degree at Macquarie University can apply for admission to the pre-law pathway prior to their first semester of studies if they meet the following criteria: Minimum ATAR to be established each year. For 2014 intake the minimum ATAR will be 93. Existing Students already enrolled in a non-law degree at Macquarie must meet the following criteria for entry to the Pre-Law Pathway: 24cp of non-law units including LEX101 or LEX102 GPA 3.0

Transfers between Programs
Subject to program requirements, students will be able to transfer between the single LLB to a double degree and from the double degree to the single degree Which one to choose at the start? 4 yr LLB if set on being a lawyer Double degree if want more flexibility around choice of units to study
