Water, Water Everywhere
Mrs. Schultz
2
I. Water is Polar Water is slightly charged on either end.
3
II. Water is a Universal Solvent
Solvent – Substance that does the dissolving. Solute – Substance that gets dissolved. More things dissolve in water than anything else. This is important because many chemical reactions only occur when the reactants are dissolved.
4
III. Water has a high specific heat
It takes a lot of energy to raise 1 gram of water by 1˚C. This means water heats up and cools down slowly.
5
IV. Water is less dense as a solid
Water expands when it freezes. This is why ice floats.
6
V. Water is Cohesive Water sticks to itself.
7
Cohesion is important to….
Water Striders! This creates surface tension, allowing water striders to “walk on water”.

VI. Water is Adhesive Water sticks to other objects.
Capillary action is when water sticks to small tubes and climbs up against the force of gravity.
10
Adhesion is important to…
Plants! This is how they get water from their roots to their leaves. Xylem tubes in a tree Redwood trees – 350 feet tall
