1 Part 1- Computer Systems Part 2 – Computer Architecture Mr Belony
Computer Science Part 1- Computer Systems Part 2 – Computer Architecture Mr Belony

2 Starter List as many computer systems as you can.

3 Part 1 – Computer Systems The general purpose machine?
A computer is any machine or device that can be programmed with a set of instructions. Most computers with a CPU, such as smartphones and PCs, can be described as general purpose machines because they can be used for many different things. Software enables a computer to be a games machine, web browser, word processor and perform a wide range of functions. Click for video Key Words: Computer System, IPO, Types of system

4 What is a computer system?
All modern computers function on the same general model of input, process and output. What examples can you think of that use this process already? Key Words: Computer System, IPO, Types of system

5 What is an input, process, output?
Input Input/Output Output Optical pen Digiatal camera Headphones Joy stick Touch screen Games controller Headset Bar code reader Webcam Key Words: Computer System, IPO, Types of system

6 Types of Computer Systems
Meaning Example Dedicated system A computer system dedicated to one task A computer controlling a robotic arm in a car factory Embedded system A dedicated system which is part of a larger mechanical or electrical system A washing machine controller; A digital camera processor General purpose system Used for many different purposes. For instance, playing music, playing games, , Internet browsing A personal computer; A tablet computer; A smartphone Key Words: Computer System, IPO, Types of system

7 Task 1 – Computer Systems Recap
8 mins Task 1 – Computer Systems Recap Complete the questions related to Computer Systems. You can complete this task in pairs. Make sure to annotate the sheet if you want to leave any notes for yourself. Key Words: Computer System, IPO, Types of system

8 Part 2 - Computer Architecture
Key Words: Components, Storage, CPU

9 Activity: Match the descriptions
4 mins Activity: Match the descriptions Central processing unit of the computer containing the control unit, ALU and cache memory. A part of the computer architecture that transfers data and signals between components. A disk drive used to read and write to a hard disk. The graphical processing unit, renders images, animations and videos for the screen. The central printed circuit board (PCB) that holds the crucial components of the system. A chip In the core logic chipset, directly connected to the CPU. A chip in the core logic chipset, typically implementing the slower capabilities of the motherboard. The short term memory that is used when performing tasks. Motherboard CPU RAM GPU Hard Drive Buses Northbridge Southbridge House point if you get all of them correct. Key Words: Components, Storage, CPU

10 Computer Architecture – Connecting together
CPU Northbridge Southbridge Graphics Card RAM Storage Devices BIOS Here is an incomplete diagram of the way in which most common computer architecture operates. Read the handout and attempt to complete the diagram. (Perhaps look to complete in pencil or leave space to correct your answer.) Key Words: Components, Storage, CPU

11 Computer Architecture – Connecting together
CPU Here is an incomplete diagram of the way in which most common computer architecture operates. Read the handout and attempt to complete the diagram. (Perhaps look to complete in pencil or leave space to correct your answer.) Graphics Card Northbridge RAM Storage Devices Input/Output Devices Southbridge Words to use: Graphics card, CPU, Southbridge, BIOS, Input/Output devices, RAM. BIOS Key Words: Components, Storage, CPU

12 Key Words: Components, Storage, CPU
Quiz questions Can you give examples of primary and secondary storage? What does BIOS stand for? What are the two items that are used to cool processors? H S Key Words: Components, Storage, CPU

13 Homework Revise for test next week on Computer Systems and Computer Architecture. Complete an A4 sized poster that form part of the computer architecture. There should be references to hardware and peripherals that are used day to day.
