$600 billion After all, companies care a lot about what kids think. Did you know that American children under 12 years-old influence over of parent spending per year!

When you see an ad on TV or in a magazine, it’s good to be on the lookout for tricks! You don't want to just buy something because a company tells you to buy it.
7
So let's take a look at some tricky ads!

Like look at this ad for Fruit Roll Ups. Doesn't it look like the roll-ups were made with lots of fruit? There is fruit all over the box!
9

But actually the roll-ups are not made with fruit at all, just some pear concentrate. If you look on the ingredients on the back, you can tell. They are made mostly with sugar and chemicals.
10

Of course, there are laws against companies telling direct lies. Like the company couldn't say there are 8 roll-ups in the box, if there are only 4.
11

But in this case, because of the pear concentrate they can pretend that it is made from "real fruit" and get away with it.

Here's another example... If you look at this box, you would think that this toy comes with the missile and the GI Joe action figure.
13

But it really doesn't. It's just the launcher. The box never SAID those other things were in there, but it would be easy to think so. In fact, the launcher doesn't even launch. It says so on the back of the box in small print.

It's important to look carefully at ads when you see them. Don't always believe what the company is telling you. After all, they want you to spend your money! :)

Now there are many different types of advertisements that businesses use to attract customers. Let's take a look at a few of them:

Endorsements Sometimes companies use what are called celebrity endorsements. That means that a famous person says that they like a certain product. For instance, here the famous baseball player Derek Jeter implying that he uses Gillette deodorant.
17

The company hopes that if you like Derek Jeter that you will also like their deodorant. Of course, it doesn't really make that much sense.
18

After all, Derek Jeter is a great baseball player, but what does he know about deodorant? Still, it has been shown that these type of ads make people want to buy things. Here's another…

Comparison Another type of ad is the comparison ad. Sometimes a company will show their product and another product and show how much better their product is.

Like here the DiGiorno Pizza Company shows that their pizza is cheaper than having a pizza delivered.

Sometimes ads compare their product versus not having something at all. For instance, in this ad, the Palm Pilot company shows how much more ordered your life is if you have their product. If you don't, they joke, you'll have to write everything on your hand.

Special Deal Another type of ad offers discounts or special deals. For instance, this ad for carpet cleaning offers a coupon for having a room cleaned for just $20.
23
Some ads try to get the attention of the customer by being funny.

For instance, most food companies hire special "food make-up artists" whose job it is to make their food look especially good.

In this ad, Century 21 tries to show with beautiful pictures all the great things you'll find if you move to Charlotte, North Carolina. They show pictures of golfing, boating, sunsets and so on.

Testimonial Finally there are the testimonial ads. This is when a real person tells you how great the product is. The company figures if you hear someone say how good a product is, that you will also want to buy it. Like this one...
