1 HW: IP: Evidence of Evolution
Tuesday May 2, 2017 I can: understand the 5 lines of evidence for evolution Agenda (10) Catalyst (35) STEM Survey (10) IP: Evolution (15) GN: Evidence of Evolution (15) IP: Evidence of Evolution (5) Exit Ticket Catalyst T/F. If false, explain why. There are enough resources to support all organisms alive. All members of a species are identical. Humans have caused evolution to occur for thousands of years by selectively breeding dogs. HW: IP: Evidence of Evolution

2 Exit Ticket Review The process by which organisms with favorable variations reproduce at higher rates than those without such variations is Disruptive selection Natural selection Sexual selection Directional selection

3 Exit Ticket Review Natural selection is a mechanism that acts on individuals within a population. Which is a result of the process of natural selection? The reproductive rate of the population decreases Genetic similarity within the population increases Organisms are better adapted to their environment Adverse changes to the environment become more frequent

4 Exit Ticket Review Darwin’s studies of the finches on the Galapagos Islands suggest that the finches’ differences in beak structure were most directly due to what? The size of the island where the finches live Acquired characteristics in the parent finches Mating behaviors of the different finch species Adaptations of the finches to varying environments

5 Exit Ticket Review Which is the best description of how natural selection changes a species over time? Survival of the strongest organisms in the environment Elimination of the smallest organisms by largest organisms Survival of the organisms genetically best adapted to the environment Survival of the organisms that occupy the largest area in an environment

Will then continue to Notes 35!

8 Evolution is CHANGE over TIME
REMEMBER: Evolution is CHANGE over TIME

9 Darwin argued that living things have been evolving on Earth for millions of years, and there are various lines of evidence for his claims. Fossil record Geographic distribution of living species Similarities in anatomy Similarities in embryology Biochemical similarities There is NO debate about whether evolution occurs. The only debate is about HOW it occurs.

10 1. Fossil record a fossil is a remnant of ancient life By comparing fossils from older rock layers with fossils from younger layers, scientists can document that life on Earth has changed over time.

11 2. Geographic distribution of living species
A. Many distinct species look similar because they faced similar pressures of natural selection.

12 2. Geographic distribution of living species
B. Some animals share a common ancestor but look different because they adapted to different environments. The modern-day finches of the Galapagos Islands are now distinct species – however, they all likely descend from a common ancestor that was blown off-course from the shore of South America.

13 3. Anatomical similarities
Examination of the anatomy, or body structure, or living animals shows the existence of homologous structures. homologous structures are structures that have different functions, but developed from the same tissue species that share homologous structures share a common ancestor humans, dogs, birds, and whales share a common ancestor

14 3. Anatomical similarities
vestigial structures are features present in modern animals that are no longer in use; give hints as to the evolution of organisms

15

16 4. Similarities in embryology
Many embryos (unborn specimens) look similar during certain stages of development.

17 4. Similarities in embryology
Many embryos (unborn specimens) look similar during certain stages of development. Similarities in embryo development show common ancestry.

18

19

20 5. Biochemical similarities
Comparing DNA sequences reveals possible evolutionary relationships. similar DNA  similar amino acids  shared ancestry this is the BEST evidence for evolution the more similar the DNA/amino acids, the more closely related the species

21

22

23 This shows that ALL organisms came from one common ancestor!
5. Biochemical similarities ALL living things on Earth share the same DNA, the same ATP, and the same genetic code. This shows that ALL organisms came from one common ancestor!
