1
DNA as Evidence for Evolution
2
DNA What is DNA again? Codes for traits, found in all living things.
How can we use DNA to help determine how closely related two organisms are?
3
Comparing DNA Today you will compare the DNA of 5 organisms. Porpoise
Deer Rhino Cow Pig
4
Pre Lab Questions In groups of two, examine the strips of DNA.
What similarities do you notice about all of the DNA strips? What differences do you notice about all of the DNA strips? Predict which two organisms you think will have the most similar DNA. Explain your answer. All have same letters. ATCG They have different ordering of letters. 3. Student can use any two organisms as their prediction.
5
Comparing the DNA strips
Line up two strands of DNA. Use a dry ease marker to cross out letters that are different. The number of differences goes in your table. HINT: It might be helpful to use a piece of paper to help keep your place.

Conclusions 4. Was your prediction correct or incorrect? Why or why not? 5. Which two organisms have the fewest number of differences? 6. Which two organisms are least closely related? Why?
8
C.E.R Claim- Which two organisms are most closely related to one another? Evidence- What evidence do you have to support your claim? Reasoning- How does your evidence support your claim?

Creating a Cladogram from DNA Differences
Create a cladogram using the following organisms . You do not need to include characteristics. Just use the DNA information given.
