Find mosses in a moist area out of the direct sunlight Grows as a group Usually grow in dense green clumps or mats, in damp or shady locations Form continuous mats on the bottom In forests and mires Mosses can store huge amounts of water Mosses are commonly confused with lichens, hornworts and liverworts Traditional uses of mosses; as insulation and for the ability to absorb liquids up to 20 times their weight

Lichens lichen is a dual organism consisting of the symbiotic association of green algae (phytobiont) and fungus (mycobiont) can be found in the soils and on the surface of tree trunks/branches the most common lichen in Finland is cladonia stellaris (star-tipped reindeer moss) and it grows in the whole Finland grows especially in dry forests which are older than 80 years lichens have many colors, sizes and forms

Beard & Foliose lichen - beard lichen is an indicator of fresh and clean air - grows all over the world - both appear as a shrub-like growth on host trees - a foliose lichen is a lichen with leafy body parts (thallus), which generally have a “skin”(cortex) on each side of the leafy lichen body parts(thallus)

- our forests are situated north of the Arctic Circle - the climate is influenced by the Gulf Stream (brings warm water from the Atlantic - the most common tree species are pine, pruce and birch - one or two or tree species dominate in our forests - in the dry forest, pine trees dominate
