Picasso Guernica 1937 Was the centerpiece for the Spanish Pavilion of the 1937 World's Fair. A brutal civil war ravaged Spain. a fascist coup led by Generalissimo Francisco Franco were attaching the new Republican government. Franco promises prosperity and stability to the people of Spain, but he delivered only death and destruction. Spain was Picasso’s homeland He did not like overtly political art work Hitler used Guernica as bombing practice and in support of Franco on April 27, 1937. They bombed it on a day when the market was full. 1600 people died and 800 were injured. Almost the entire town was destroyed Protesters hit the streets of Paris Picasso went to his studio and started to work on the mural

Ch’i Pai-shih His output reflects a diversity of interests and experience, generally focusing on the smaller things of the world rather than the large landscape, and he continued the styles of 17th- and 18th-century individualists. Fish, shrimp, crabs, and frogs were his favorite subjects. He was most accomplished at simple, freely sketched compositions, but he could also successfully execute a meticulous style.

Harlem Renaissance: Literature
Writers of the Harlem renaissance celebrated ties to African culture, black pride, and questioned the position of blacks in America. Famous Harlem writers: Zora Neale Hurston and Langston Hughes. I, Too, Sing America by Langston Hughes I, too, sing America. I am the darker brother. They send me to eat in the kitchen When company comes, But I laugh, And eat well, And grow strong. Literature Literature of the 1920s reflected a rejection of idealism and the narrow-mindedness and shallowness of life in America. It questioned the materialism of the 1920s. Many American authors were so soured by American culture that they moved to Europe. Thus becoming expatriates- a person temporarily or permanently residing in a country and culture other than that of the person's upbringing. F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway and H.L. Mencken were apart of this group known as the Lost Generation.

Entertainment Radio: the most powerful communications medium to emerge
It allowed for the nation to share news AS it happened. The invention in radio also helped spread appreciation for tends in new music especially jazz and promoted a shared culture.

Movies became a national pastime. The first movie with sound was produced in 1927 and Walt Disney came out with the first animated film with sound. Movies portrayed materialism and sometimes racist themes such as in Birth of a Nation.

A style of architecture applied to residences and public buildings that is minimalist in concept, is devoid of regional characteristics, stresses functionalism, and rejects all nonessential decorative elements; typically this style emphasizes the horizontal aspects of a building.
