1 Funding search Engines
PIVOT: Non-NIH Funding Opportunities - Grants and Fellowships: Fastweb

2 Early Career Research Funding
What you need to know: There are specific funding opportunities for Post docs and junior faculty Some institutions provide internal funding opportunities Don’t be myopic; cast a broad net by researching opportunities for funding

3 Funding Sources NIH CDC (Health Statistics and Laboratory Research)
AcademyHealth Ash Foundation Obesity Society American Federation for Aging Research Brain & Behavior Research Foundation

4 NIH Post Doc Fellowships (Intramural)
Program Description: Postdoctoral training in the NIH Intramural Research Program (IRP) provides the opportunity for recent doctoral degree recipients to enhance their research skills in the resource-rich National Institutes of Health (NIH) environment, which consists of more than 1200 laboratories/research projects located on the main campus in Bethesda, MD and the surrounding area as well as in Baltimore and Frederick, MD; Research Triangle Park, NC; Hamilton, MT; Framingham, MA; and Detroit, MI. Trainees pursue basic, translational, and clinical research free from the demands of obtaining grants and teaching, although opportunities to do both are available.

5 NIH Post Doc Fellowships (Intramural)
Eligibility: To be eligible for postdoctoral training in the NIH IRP, individuals must hold a doctoral degree (PhD, MD, DDS, or the equivalent) and have no more than five years of relevant research experience since receipt of their most recent doctoral degree. U.S. citizens and permanent residents are appointed to Postdoctoral Intramural Research Training Awards (IRTAs); citizens of other nations are appointed as Visiting Fellows. Application Procedure: As is generally the case, potential applicants for postdoctoral positions are encouraged to contact NIH investigators with whom they would like to work directly, regardless of whether a position has been posted or not. You can find a YouTube video entitled Finding an NIH Mentor on the OITE YouTube page.

7 NIH Post Doc Fellowships (Extramural)
NIH F32, Ruth L. Kirschstein Postdoctoral Individual National Research Service Award is most common Standard application dates apply (April, August, December) Anticipated start date 8 months from due date Individuals may receive up to 3 years of support at the post doc level Annual stipend (projected FY2017) $47,484 and increases with years of experience Institutional allowance: $7,850 per year

8 NIH Post Doc Fellowships (Extramural)
NIH T32, Ruth L. Kirschstein Postdoctoral Institutional National Research Service Award is training award to a faculty member on which pre and post docs may be supported as fellows This is not awarded directly to the post doc The T32 is awarded to an institutional PI for up to five years Fellows are selected by the award investigators via a defined process as designated in the award application Stipend levels are the same The institutional allowance is the same Grants.gov: PA

9 New Researcher Funding Sources and Opportunities
Pathway to Independence Award (K99-R00)    The primary, long-term goal of the Pathway to Independence (PI) Award program is to increase and maintain a strong cohort of new and talented NIH-supported independent investigators.  The PI award program is designed to facilitate a timely transition from a mentored postdoctoral research position to a stable independent research position with independent NIH or other independent research support at an earlier stage than is currently the norm.  Grants.gov: PA

10 Funding Sources and Opportunities
NIH Director’s New Innovator Award    The NIH Director's New Innovator Award addresses two important goals: stimulating highly innovative research and supporting promising early stage investigators. Many new investigators have exceptionally innovative research ideas, but not the preliminary data required to fare well in the traditional NIH peer review system. As part of NIH's commitment to increasing opportunities for new scientists, it has created the NIH Director's New Innovator Award to support exceptionally creative early stage investigators who propose highly innovative projects that have the potential for unusually high impact. This award complements ongoing efforts by NIH and its institutes and centers to fund new investigators through R01 grants and other mechanisms. (Up to 5 years; $300K DC/year)

Health and Society Scholars Program The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Health & Society Scholars program is a national program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF). The program is based on the principle that progress in the field of population health depends on multidisciplinary collaboration and exchange. Its goal is to improve health by training scholars to: Investigate rigorously the connections among biological, genetic, behavioral, environmental, economic and social determinants of health. Develop, evaluate and disseminate knowledge and interventions that integrate and act on these determinants to improve health.

13 Robert Wood Johnson Foundation
New Connections – Increasing Diversity of RWJF Programming New Connections: Increasing Diversity of RWJF Programming awards 12- to 24- month grants to early to mid-career researchers and scholars who have been underrepresented in research and evaluation activities supported by RWJF. The program is designed to expand the diversity of perspectives that inform RWJF program strategy and introduce new researchers and scholars to the Foundation. New Connections provides up to 13 grants annually of $100,000 each to support mid-career Consultants and early career Junior Investigators to address specific research and evaluation questions posed by RWJF program teams.

Evidence for Action: Investigator Initiated Research to Build a Culture of Health Evidence for Action (E4A), a national program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, funds research that expands the evidence base needed to build a Culture of Health. Our mission is to support rigorously designed quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods research that yields convincing findings regarding the population health, well-being, and equity impacts of specific policies, programs and partnerships. We are especially interested in research examining the health impacts of programmatic or policy interventions that address factors outside the domain of health care services or public health practice. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, there is no deadline for submission. Generally, applicants can expect to be notified within 6-8 weeks of their LOI submission. Applicants invited to the full proposal stage will have 2 months to submit their proposal once they receive notification. Full proposal funding decisions will generally be made within 6-8 weeks of the submission deadline.

16 PCORI Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute Research Focus:
Private organization Stakeholder driven process with a strong focus on patient engagement PCORI’s purpose, as defined by the law, is to help patients, clinicians, purchasers, and policy makers make better-informed health decisions by “advancing the quality and relevance of evidence about how to prevent, diagnose, treat, monitor, and manage diseases, disorders, and other health conditions.” Research Focus: Conditions that affect large numbers of people across a range of populations Conditions that place a heavy burden on individuals, families, specific populations, and society Rare diseases, which are difficult to study Key Populations: Racial and ethnic minorities Older adults Low-income  Residents of rural areas Women Children Individuals with special healthcare needs, including individuals with disabilities, individuals with multiple chronic diseases, individuals with rare diseases, and individuals whose genetic makeup affects their medical outcomes Patients with low health literacy/numeracy and limited English proficiency Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) persons Veterans and members of the armed forces and their families

17 PCORI Pipeline to Proposal Award:
Pipeline to Proposal Awards initiative aims to build a national community of patients, stakeholders, and researchers who have the expertise and passion to participate in patient-centered outcomes research, or PCOR, and to create partnerships within that community that lead to high-quality research proposals.  The Pipeline to Proposal Awards initiative is driven by three unique program goals: Successfully establish an infrastructure for patients, caregivers, and other stakeholders to increase CER information and engagement in research. Strengthen relationships between researchers, patients and stakeholders, particularly in communities that have been underrepresented in research. Build capacity for researcher/non research partnerships to create research questions and submit PCOR research proposals that can be considered for PCOR funding. Pipeline Awards will be used to help build capacity and engage community around a common healthcare research interest. These awards focus on building the community of patients, stakeholders, and researchers who can participate in patient-centered outcomes research.
