What does Mrs Edwards do for the school in terms of making it an eco friendly environment?
Mrs Edwards has helped with the eco issues in our school for around 10 years. In this time she has encouraged the whole school to be more responsible for the school buildings and grounds. Each room in the building now has an identifiable green paper box. We now also have paper and cardboard recycling skips to encourage people to recycle all the unused paper and cardboard.
4
At Ysgol Dinas Brân we follow our Eco-Code:
‘As a sustainable school we aim to care for ourselves as individuals, each other and our environment, both local and global’ Turn off lights Don’t leave electronic equipment unnecessarily on standby Close external doors during cold weather to save energy Turn off taps Dispose of litter carefully in bins Recycle paper and cardboard Buy Fairtrade products when possible Show respect and care for our environment
5
We have a school eco code with posters:
stop the drop!

Diffoddwch Y Golau TURN OFF THE LIGHTS
We have also started to urge people to turn things off when they are not in use, i.e. lights in an empty classroom. We have ensured that there are litter bins where they are most needed around the school. Diffoddwch Y Golau TURN OFF THE LIGHTS

Recently we have also banned children from eating inside the corridors and to eat food you must be inside either the main hall or the canteen. We have considered ways to reduce heat loss by getting new boilers for the school. We have spring loaded taps also to reduce the amount of water that is wasted.
8
We have considered recycling bins for recycling plastic bottles but the recycling company said we do not need to split them apart. Also now we see food wastage as an issue and we have considered having the canteen turn all the waste food into compost but we need to get the school recycling garden sorted.
9
The economical club we had is now come apart of the school council.
The year 10 and 11 takes care of the recycling bins. Mrs Edwards does not feel like a club would work because if kids know there is a group going around cleaning they won’t feel as if they would have to knowing that someone else will do it.
10
We have the platinum eco-school award for 2 years.
We have had the green flag for a number of years. These two awards show we are a eco-friendly school.

Mr Baldwin and his gardening club
He has been running this club since September. They started with 19 people and that has decreased to 7 of the best workers. He explains that he started this project as he seen the area was over growing and he wanted to make a difference and turn it into a garden. Since starting he has managed to clean out the area of land ready to grow veg. He also says the garden will reach its full potential with time and man power. He does this club every single Friday. He also enlightens the fact how it’s a nice way to end the week and it is a worth while project not a short term one so in the future we will see it in its glory.
