Internal Energy of a system equals the sum of a random distribution of kinetic and potential energies associated with the molecules of the system.

There is an absolute scale of temperature which does not depend upon the physical property of any particular substance.
On the thermodynamic scale (Kelvin), absolute zero is at that temperature at which all substances have a minimum internal energy.
