Background Rapid technological advances in laboratory automation with an increasing emphasis on quality and safety. These new technologies are adaptable to automation and major manufacturers in this field have come up with semi and fully automated equipment for lab tests .Most important is balancing the cost with the goals of analytical quality, patient safety and clinical service needs. Automation can greatly improve the cycle time of repetitive test procedures such as regression tests, build tests, and performance tests combining automation with an optimization strategy can greatly improve lab efficiency, speed, productivity and performance

Methodology Systematic sampling technique in which every 5th sample was picked until a total of one hundred and fifty samples which were run in both BTS-310 photometer and Cobas C11 was obtained. Comparison was made in the following areas: sample identification, transcription of results and turnaround time.

Results Automation reduced sample identification error from 23(15%) down to 9(6%), result transcription error from 6(4%) to 0(0%) and also reduced turnaround time per sample from one hour to twenty five minutes. Challenges experienced due to automation included high initial cost, space availability, staff competency, and feedback regarding the equipment and services of the vendor.

Conclusion, recommendation
Despite challenges that come with automation it proved superior hence it should be fully embraced in all testing facilities since its merits outnumber demerits as demonstrated in the above findings.
