This Week’s Line Up August 10th – First day of school! September 4th – Labor Day – No School October 6th – Parish Fair Holiday - No School October 12th – End of 1st 9 Weeks October 13th – No School for students – Teacher work day In this section of the newsletter, you will find a weekly outline of what we will be learning in class, as well as when any tests are scheduled. Math: Review of Second Grade Skills - Pre-assessment - Math Models - In class work will be graded. Reading: Fairy Tales and Fables - Pre-Assessments - Story Elements - Vocab Test Thursday - Comprehension Test Thursday Writing: - Friendly Letters - Parts of a letter - We will write every day Language/Grammar: 4 Types of Sentences - Combining with linking words Test Friday with Phonics Science and Social Studies: Each week, we will either focus on science OR social studies, not both. We will switch our focus every 2-3 weeks, depending on the units. We will start with Social Studies this week. - Begin Unit on Louisiana Geography - Our Place in the World Booklet - Understanding of Cities, Parishes, States, and Countries. Weekly Phonics Skill Instead of a traditional spelling list to memorize each week, we will be focusing on a phonics skill to practice. I will provide a set list of example words that will be tested. The students will also be tested on applying the rule to new words as well. These skills will be tested along with our weekly grammar test on Fridays. No test this week. Vocabulary fable – a short story told to teach a lesson moral – a lesson compare – showing how two things are alike contrast – showing how two things are different Notes from the Coach - Every Monday, your child will receive this newsletter. It will tell you everything you need to know about what is going on in our classroom, so it is very important that you read it and go over it with your child every week! - Every Thursday, I will send home your child’s test folder (blue plastic folder).. All test receiving a grade of D or F will need to be signed and returned to me in the folder. In addition, the cover of the folder should be signed as well. - There will be at least some homework every night Monday – Thursday. I believe that practice is important, but this should not take longer than 20 – 30 minutes. Always, there will be math, phonics, and occasionally another subject. Check their agenda nightly.
