1 Harris County Municipal Utility District - #341
Water System Maintenance Informational Meeting and Q&A January 19, 2017

2 System Maintenance Why are we doing it
County surface water is treated with chlorine and ammonia creating Chloramines and over time nitrates build up in the system Water quality tests indicate recurring pockets of nitrates in the system Periodic water flushing performed to reduce buildup Before nitrate concentrations increase further TNG recommends a chlorine flush to rebalance system MUD Board made decision to proceed with flush while nitrate concentrations are low Note: MUD 370 which services LOEN successfully completed a similar flush just before Thanksgiving Nitrates (NO3) are an essential source of nitrogen (N) for plants. When nitrogen fertilizers are used to enrich soils, nitrates may be carried by rain, irrigation and other surface waters through the soil into ground water. Human and animal wastes can also contribute to nitrate contamination of ground water. Wikipdia

3 System Maintenance How will this be accomplished
Additional chlorine will be injected into the system at the water plant Currently the water is treated with a 2.5 to 3.5 ppm of free chlorine The target treatment level is 4.0 ppm of free chlorine Note: commercial pool chlorine concentration range from ppm Starting from the water plant connection point and working through LOE, drain points will be opened to flush the lines Closure of the drainage valve is based on the water running clear and the residual chlorine content reaching the target level Note: MUD 371 this took less than 10 mins per valve The discharged water will enter the storm water system TNG has prepared a daily plan of flushing identifying areas (see map)

4 System Maintenance When will this happen
