5.6 Parallel and Perpendicular Equations

Parallel Lines – lines in the same plane that do NOT intersect
Parallel Lines – lines in the same plane that do NOT intersect. Parallel lines have the SAME slope. E1 -4 E2 E3 0

Perpendicular Lines – lines that intersect at right angles.
Perpendicular lines have slopes that are opposite reciprocals of each other. (Change the sign and flip the fraction) E4 7 E5 E6 0 Vertical and horizontal lines are perpendicular to each other.

Ex 7 Identify the slope of the following equation and then identify the parallel and perpendicular slopes.

Ex 8 Identify the slope of the following equation and then identify the parallel and perpendicular slope.

Ex 9 Identify the slope of the following equation and then identify the parallel and perpendicular slope.

Ex 10 Write the slope-intercept form of a line through (7, -1) and parallel to the graph of

Ex 11 Write the slope-intercept form of a line through (4, -1) and perpendicular to the graph of

Ex 12 Write the slope-intercept form of a line parallel to the graph of 2y + 5x = 2 that passes through (0, 6).

Ex 13 Write the slope-intercept form of a line perpendicular to the graph of 2y + 5x = 2 that passes through (0, 6).

Ex 14 Write an equation of the line that is parallel to the y-axis and passes through the point (-4, 2). What does a line that is parallel to the y-axis look like? (vertical or horizontal) Remember HOY and VUX… What should the equation look like?

Ex 15 Write an equation of the line that is perpendicular to the y-axis and passes through the point (-4, 2). What does a line that is perpendicular to the y-axis look like? (vertical or horizontal) Remember HOY and VUX… What should the equation look like?

Determine if the following equations are parallel, perpendicular or neither
