1 Lot of practice but a quick check
Stepping it up! Lot of practice but a quick check

2 About the activity This activity can be used to practice addition, subtraction and multiplication of whole numbers and integers Can be used for fractions also – multiplication and division in particular In each case some numbers will be given and the rest have to be computed Number of rows can be extended beyond 4 This gives a lot of practice to the student But the teacher can check quickly (of course after calculating all the way once)

3 The steps (or wall)

4 Addition Numbers in the last row are given
For integers, have a mix of positive and negative numbers and not all alternating Each of the remaining cells will be the sum of the two numbers below So students will be “stepping up” Note that (for whole numbers) the top number will be quite large compared to those at the bottom Only the top needs to be checked 

5 Addition 5 + 6 8 + 5

6 Subtraction This is the reverse of the addition steps i.e. once filled it should resemble addition steps To get each number, subtract the known number beside from the one above Setting it up for whole number requires some considerations to avoid negative numbers (next slide) No such issue arise for integers 

7 Subtraction Start at the top
Then fill any one cell below if with a number < ½ previous number Fill any one cell below the last number such that new number < ½ previous number Keep going till you reach the bottom-most row This is to avoid negative numbers For integers, no such consideration is needed

8 Subtraction 21 < 43/2 9 < 21/2 3 < 9/2

9 Subtraction 43 – 21 21 – 9 Students will go top down
Topmost number – number below = number of empty cell Similarly keep going to fill all empty cells Teacher will have to check the numbers at either end of the bottom row only 43 – 21 21 – 9

10 Multiplication This is similar to addition i.e.
Numbers at the bottom are given Each of the remaining cells will be the sum of the two numbers below So students will be “stepping up” again Since the products will get significantly bigger, it is good to have only single digit numbers in the bottom row This should be given only after students have learnt muti-digit multiplication For integers, have a mix of positive and negative numbers and not all alternating

11 Multiplication 30  66 5  6 1980 6  11 30 66

12 Division This will be the reverse of multiplication
This can be done by setting the bottom, working up and then erasing all but one number in each row But that needs prior preparation For fractions however no such consideration is needed 

13 Division  600 756000 600 1260 1260  30 30 42 5
