1 How to Build a Website Using Wordpress
Coach Wayne

2 Step 1: Purchasing a Domain
The first thing that you need to do is come up with a unique domain name. This CAN’T contain any terms associated with Beachbody. i.e. p90xstud.com Next, check the availability at Once you find a good name, purchase it. You will need to purchase a hosting package through GoDaddy as well. Make sure you go with the largest hosting package they offer. *You will need to activate the hosting before moving forward* There is no need to purchase anything else.

3 Step 2: Purchasing a Theme
The next thing you need to do is purchase a Wordpress theme to build your site. I used $39.99 per year. You can find other Wordpress themes with Google Search, but I recommend Elegant Themes because of the support and tutorials. You want your theme to look professional, contain drop-down menus, and be user-friendly. Download your theme and save it to your computer. I created a separate folder called “Website.”

4 Step 3: Upload Wordpress Through GoDaddy
Sign into GoDaddy Go to “Hosting,” where you will see your website. Right next to your website name you will see “Launch,” which you need to click on. (note: GoDaddy navigation may change) A new window will pop up. Click on “Your Applications.” A new page will load. On the left side of the page you will see a list containing “Blogs.” Click on it. A new list will appear. Click on “Wordpress.”

5 Step 3 Continued You will then see the Wordpress application. Click on “Install Now.” IMPORTANT: When installing, it will ask you where you want to install it. By default, it will put it in If you keep the default, it won’t install properly. You must delete the “/wordpress” and install it directly into This way, your Wordpress site will be your actual website. You also will be asked to create a screen name and password to access your Wordpress Dashboard. DO NOT FORGET to write this down!

6 Step 4: Transfer Theme Using FTP
Now that you have your domain purchased, theme downloaded, and Wordpress installed, you need to transfer your theme to your website. Go back into GoDaddy, click on “Hosting,” “Launch.” Click on “Content”. Click on “FTP Client.” Open a new window and go to Once there, sign in, and then on the right-hand side of the page you will see “Support.” Under support click on “Tutorials.”

7 Step 4 Continued In “Tutorials,” click on “How to upload and activate your theme using FTP.” It will give you step by step directions on how to upload your theme.

8 Step 5: Activating Your Theme
Next, you will need to sign into your Wordpress Dashboard by going to This is where you will create your website. In your Dashboard, you will see a column on the left side. Click on the arrow for “Appearance.” A drop-down menu will appear. Click on “Themes.” Once there, you will need to activate the theme you just uploaded. Now you are ready to build your site!

9 Step 6: Creating Parent Pages
Now that you have your theme uploaded, you will start building your main (parent) pages. To understand what I’m showing you, open up a new tab and go to my website Switch back to your tab. In the column on the left on your Dashboard home page, you will see “Pages.” Click on the arrow, and then select “Add New.” First, we will create all your main (parent) pages. The main pages on my website are the buttons across the top of the home page. “Home,” “Programs,” “Supplements,” “Gear,” “Q&A,” “Coach W’s Tips,” etc.

10 Step 6 Continued Let’s create your first parent page, “Programs.”
In the top bar, under “Add New Page,” add the title of the page, which again, is “Programs.” On the right side, you will see a box called “Attributes.” Under that you will see “Parent” and then a drop-down menu. By default, “main page (no parent)” will be selected. Keep the default for all parent pages. Above “Attributes” you will see “Publish,” which you want to click. You are going to repeat this entire process for all parent pages.

11 Step 7: Creating Regular Pages
Now that you have the parent pages created, you will assign regular pages to each. Again, click on “Add New Page.” (See slide 13) First, let’s start creating pages for the “Programs” category. To do so, go to “Attributes,” and click on the drop-down menu. Since you’re creating pages under “Programs,” you want to select “Programs.” If you’re creating a supplement page, then select “Supplements.” If equipment, select “Equipment.” Get it? Now, go back to the top and add the title of the page, and we will make the first one “P90X.” To understand what I’m talking about, go back to my site. On the main bar, hover your cursor over “Programs,” and you will see a drop-down menu. The first one you will see is P90X. This is what you’re currently creating.

12 Step 8: Adding Pictures To Pages
Below the slot where you add the title, you will see a large area to add more information. This is where you want to add the page description and pictures. Above the Bold/Italicized symbols, you will see “Upload/Insert.” Right next to that, you will see a small square that resembles a TV. This is the “Add an Image” button. Click on it. (See next slide) A new window will open, and you will see “Select Files.” This is where you can upload images from your computer. Once you select a file and it uploads, you will see a box where you can make adjustments to the picture. With most pictures, you will use “Alignment Left.” Click “Insert Into Post.” If you don’t have any Beachbody product pictures saved to your computer, you can find them by going to “Shop” in Team Beachbody and/or your Coach Office.

13

14 Step 9: Creating Buy Now Buttons
You can use any image software to create “BuyNow” buttons. These are the steps if you use Microsoft Publisher: Open a blank page. On the far left side of the page, you will see a little symbol called “Autoshapes.” Once you open that up, go to “Basic Shapes” and choose the shape you want. Draw the button. Double click in the middle of the button. This opens “Format Auto-Shape”.

15 Step 9 Continued In order to choose the color of the button, click on “Color” and then scroll down to “Fill Effects.” I like the gradient fill. Next, you want to create a shadow for the button. To do so, go to the upper right hand side of the page and click on the green square. (See next slide for example) Choose which shadow you want, and then go down to “Shadow Settings” to adjust the shadow. Next, you want to add text to your button.

16

17 Step 9 Continued Click on the text box, and create a rectangle inside your button. Type what you want the button to say. Center it, choose the font and size. Now that you have your button created, you have to save it. To do so, take your cursor and make a square around the entire Buy Now button. You will see a bunch of little white dots. Right click in the center of the button, and then “Save as Picture.” A new box will open. Where it says “Save as Type,” choose “JPEG File Interchange Format.” Save it. Now it’s ready to use!

18 Step 10: Inserting Buy Now Buttons
Now that you have your Buy Now button created, you can insert it into your page or post. To do so, follow the exact same directions as to add a picture to your page or post (See slide 12). Once inserted, you want to link your button to the Team Beachbody Shop Page so that you will get the credit. The easiest way to do this is by using the links that are already on my website. Open my website tab. Also, open up Microsoft Word.

19 Step 10 Continued On my website, click on “P90X Plus” under the “Programs” tab. The P90X Plus page will open. (If you were creating the Insanity page, you would go to my Insanity page. If the RevAbs page, go to my RevAbs page. Get it?) You should see my Buy Now button for P90X Plus. Right click on it, and then select “Copy Shortcut.” In the Microsoft Word page, paste the link. See next 2 slides.

20 Right Click on button Select Copy Shortcut

21 Replace my coach ID with yours

22 Step 10 Continued Now that you have the link with your coach ID #, you need to connect it to your Buy Now button. Highlight and copy the new link from the Word Document. Go back to the edit page in your Dashboard. Click on your Buy Now button, and then click on the link button. (See next slide) Paste your new link in the “Link URL” slot. For “Target,” click on “Open link in new window.” Insert into page.

23

24 Step 11: Add Plugins On the left side of your Dashboard, you will see “Plugins.” Click on the drop-down arrow and select “Add New.” Search for the Plugins I recommend on the next slide, install them, and then activate them.

25

26 Step 12: Adding Categories
On the left side of your Dashboard Home Page you will see “Posts.” Click on the arrow for the drop-down menu and select “Categories.” Whenever you create a new post, you have to select a category to place it in. This is where you are going to create your categories. If you want to create a sub-category, the option is there under “Category Parent.” i.e. I created a sub-category called “My Diet” under “Nutrition.” Nutrition is the parent category. See next slide for directions and the categories that I use. Recommended: Workouts, Supplements, Motivation, Product Reviews, Nutrition

27

28 Step 13: Adding Posts Adding posts is almost the exact same as adding pages. To add a post, click the drop-down arrow on “Posts” and click on “Add New.” As you will see, it’s identical to “Add a Page.” If you want to increase your traffic in terms of Google search purposes, create a post daily. Each post is going to focus on a different fitness topic, and you’re going to want to target certain keywords in each post. You want to use these keywords no more than 2-3 times in your post. You can see posts on my site for examples. See next slide.

29

30 Step 13: Related Posts Since you installed the related posts plug-in, you need to now use it for your pages and posts. You will find this at the bottom of the “Edit Page” and “Edit Post” sections. Whenever you have a page or a post that has related topics (equipment, supplements, etc.), you are going to want to choose the related posts or pages associated with it. That related post will automatically be referred by the post or page you’re creating. i.e. If your post is about P90X, the related post should be the P90X Pull-Up Bar Page See next slide.

31

32 Step 14: Changing Permalinks
This is fairly simple, but is important for Google SEO purposes. Go to “Settings” and select “Permalinks.” Once there, choose the “Month and Name” option. Click “Save Changes.” See next slide.

33

34 Step 15: Adding Widgets Widgets are little sections that you can add to your website, either to your header, sidebar, or footer. To access your widgets, go to “Appearance” and then select “Widgets.” To add a widget to a section, just click on it and drag it over. The widgets that I feel are necessary are “ET Advertisement,” “Search,” “Categories,” and “Archives.” The most difficult is the “ET Advertisement,” which is what I will focus on for the next few slides.

35 Step 15: Adding Widgets- “ET Advertisement”
The first thing you will need to know is the proper size for your advertisements. Instead of you doing this through trial and error, I already have them on my website. Right click on them and save them as a picture. Once you have saved each image, upload it into your media library and it will be ready to put into the ET Advertisement, and it will already be the correct size.

36 Step 15 Continued On your Dashboard Home Page, you will see “Media” in left column. Click on the arrow to bring up the drop-down menu, and select “Library.” You will see an “Add New” button at the top, which you will click on. Upload your Advertisement Picture into the library. Once you have it uploaded, you will need to copy the File URL. To do so, click on the picture in the media library. See next slide.

37 Replace with the file URL

38 Step 15 Continued Next, you will need go back to the widgets page and click on the drop-down arrow for the “ET Advertisement” on the right side of the page. (The one already in the sidebar). See next slide. As you can see, I labeled my advertisement section as “Most Popular Products.” For “Banner 1 Image,” you want to paste the File URL that you just copied. For “Banner 1 URL,” you want to put the URL of the page associated with your advertisement. i.e. If your advertisement is P90X, then you want to have it linked to the P90X page. Get it? For “Banner 1 Title,” you just put the title of the advertisement.

39

40 Step 16: Changing the Logo
This is probably the most difficult step when creating your own website. First, you must open the Photoshop Files/logo_blank.png in either Microsoft Publisher or Photoshop. To do this, go to Publisher or Photoshop, click “Open,” and then go to the folder that you downloaded your Wordpress Theme. Double click on “Theme,” and then open the “Photoshop” folder. You will now see the logo_blank file. Now that you have the logo_blank file open, create your own unique logo.

41 Step 16 Continued Once you have created your logo, save it in the theme/(Your Theme Name)/images folder. Your theme may use one of several different file types as its logo file. (eg: .jpg, .gif, .png) Just be sure to save it as the type of file used in your theme. It will ask if you want to replace the existing file. Select yes. For the new logo to go into effect, you must transfer it to your website using FTP. You can use any FTP client. GoDaddy has one available in your web hosting account under “Content” Others are “Core FTP” and “FileZilla”.

42 Step 16 Continued Open your FTP client. In the browser on the LEFT side, find the logo file (logo.png or logo.jpg or logo.gif) file that you saved on your computer. In the browser on the RIGHT side open the “wp-content” folder, “themes,” your theme, and “images.” Once you have opened the “images” folder, go back to the LEFT side and highlight your logo file. MAKE SURE IT’S HIGHLIGHTED! See next slide for further instructions.

43 When your screen looks like this, click the upload arrows

44 Step 16 Continued Once you click the arrow to transfer the new file over to your Wordpress theme, it will ask you if you want to overwrite, and you will select yes. Your logo should now be working!

45 Step 17: Adjusting Theme Options
On the left side of your Dashboard Home Page, under “Appearance,” select (Your Theme) Theme Options. Most of these options are self-explanatory. If you have issues, refer back to the Elegant Themes website, for the Support Forum and Tutorials. See next slide.

46 Once you select this, go to your theme and there will be a TON of answers!
Great video tutorials!

47 Step 18: Adding Links to Parent Pages
If someone clicks on the parent page (Programs, Supplements, etc.) on your Home Page, you want to make sure you have all related pages posted on that page. To do so, click on “Pages” and then “Edit.” Select a parent page. Once you open the parent page, you need to start adding each program as a bullet point. Once you have the programs listed, you need to link it to the actual page. To do so, you will have to open up a new tab and go to your website. Place your cursor over the parent page, and then hover over the page you’re linking to. Right click, and click on “Copy Shortcut.” Use the link button and paste the link you just copied. Repeat for all parent pages. See next slide.

48

49 Step 19: Adding Videos If you want to add a video to a post or a page, just open the “Edit Page” or “Edit Post” options. Find the code for the video If it’s a Beachbody video, you can get that by going to your Coach Office, clicking on “Video Library.” Here, you will find a TON of videos that you can use to explain products and the coaching opportunity. To get the code, just click on the video, and then you will see a button that says “Get Code” and then “Copy Code.” See next slide for next steps.
